Location: British Columbia | What would cause sudden Ventral Edema? It does not cause any pain when I touch it or massage it and the horse is eating, defacting, and moving fine.
Could stall confinement cause this? The only change in the horses routine is that she's been stalled significantly more than usual and I've recently added(in the last two days) beet pulp to their diet. The swelling is from the udder to about the middle of the barrel and about 3.5" wide. It was not like this yesterday. I have a vet coming scheduled for Monday at 1:30 if it has not cleared up.

I had a horse do the same thing, he was scheduled to be at the swim farm for two months. He was getting EO's and in a stall. Told them to stop the EO's he didn't get better. Thought maybe it was the stalling or the water in the aqua-tred or the pool, he didn't get better with them rinsing him twice after he completed his workout. Picked him up, turned him out into his paddock and he got better. His was grossly swollen. |

Sure, will post updates. Will try to get before and after pictures as well.
I did speak to the vet on the phone and explain the situation, he didn't seem alarmed and just said that it may be due to me riding hard and then stalling afterwards. The horse has limited turn out so he suggested I turn her out for the weekend and compare on Monday. I assume it is poor circulation from being a stall that is causing the swelling, but to my knowledge it would be in the legs, not the abdomen?
Other possibilities include changes in feed, level of exercise from being turned out for the last year and parasites(She had not been dewormed in over 2 years- I dewormed her 2 days ago-could be a reaction??). |

Location: Bandera, TX | Yes, worming can be a factor. In my small animals they have died. In cattle and horses I've not lost one. I thought the same thing for my horse at the swim facility. Gave them a power-pak and he got another week before they called me back to say...noope that wasn't the cause. He just wanted to come home and enjoy his turnout. |
