Location: NE TX | My mares tail is fluffed up at the top and I have no idea why. She's on a regular worming schedule, I powerpaked her about 3 weeks ago, she's healthy otherwise...her tail is just fluffed up and I don't know why! I'm going to try and attach a picture but don't know if it will work.
Any ideas what could cause this??

| Ive heard if she is rubbing the top of her tail their udders need to be cleaned? I did it today with my 2 mares who rub their tails. Never new this, they both were very dirty. Cant wait to see if they quit rubbing their tails! |

Hmm, I hadn't thought about that I haven't cleaned her in a few years..may be an easy over looked thing to fix! |

Yes, clean her udder. I clean my mares' weekly and the amount of gunk that accumulates in just a week is nasty. |

| I "pop" my horses tail every day and it fixes it in a matter of hours!!! I really wish i could explain it better but if you grab a clump of hair at the top of the tail and pull up it will pop. Just like popping your knuckles. Sorry I don't have a video. But when you do it the hair lays down overnight. |

in season a mare will do this,
tapeworms eggs have been laid out there which in that case you deworming 3 weeks ago wouldnt have mattered because the eggs have already been laid..
have you looked under her tail?
or bugs etc.. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Oh that is ugly looking lol, Like Bibs said could be itchy tail, pinworms cause alot of this. But maybe get a good shampoo that will moisturize her tail and shamppo 2 or 3 times a week to see if that will help. Her tail head just looks really dry to me. Good luck  |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | I clean my mares bags at least once a week. We have ticks horrible around here. Check for ticks in their crack and on their tail. |

Panacur or Safe Guard (same stuff) will not kill anything .. it just puts 3 types of round worms to sleep so they can be pooped out the rear.
What you are seeing is the ones that have hatched or remained inside are laying eggs at her rectum ...
Give her a full tube of Ivermectin to kill the round worms and others and tail hairs will fall in line after 10 days.
Even when you use Ivermectin as your sole wormer you will see the tail hairs stand up when the round worms try to fight to stay inside. The tail hairs standing up is due to the mare/horse switching their tails in aggravation at the itch or tickle created by the round worms. |

Location: SW North Dakota | Pinworms can cause them to rub their tails even if they are systemically treated for all worms. Use liquid ivermectin and rub it around their anus like chapstick and poke a little bit in the chute. Works great. |

Location: NE Texas | Have you seen her rubbing it? Could be just sunburn. Some fly sprays or other hair care products can cause hair to be more easily damaged by the sun, causing it to get dry, brittle, and stick up. |

Location: NE TX | I haven't seen her rubbing and it's not being scratched off its been like this for a few months I've given ivermectin, PowerPak, ivermectin again, strongid, panacur small tube....it's worse some days than others. I did clean her yesterday and haven't been out to check on her today (she stays at a friends house cause I don't have any acreage). Flitastic suggested popping her but it's not a chiropractic issue she gets chiropracted/stretched almost daily. I'm just at a loss. I'm hoping washing will fix it! |

Yeah it doesn't LOOK like she's been rubbing it...looks dry to me. If she was rubbing you would know. There would be broken hairs and a matted tangled mess. I've been spraying my horses' tail with the Eqyss Marigold spray to help hydrate as mine DOES rub his tail in the summer months. |

Location: South | All of mine have been itchy like what you are describing. UTD deworming everything. I think mine is dry skin- MTG is taking care of it. |
