My GMC Acadia has been in and out of the shop since the end of March. It still isn't fixed, and I'm considering trading it in on something different. I really dont know if I want another SUV, and I'm leaning towards a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pickup with 4 doors and 4WD. We live on a dirt road that gets pretty greasy when it rains. I haven't gotten stuck yet in the FWD SUV, but there are times where I questioned wether I'd be able to get home. We do have another Dodge 2500 that has a bale bed and is used to pull trailers.

I need something to get back and forth to work, haul my two young boys around and haul feed and other farm/home supplies. What do you all have?

And since I'm leaning towards used pickups are the higher mileage gas pickups ok? Or are they just money pits? I know from experience diesel pickups are not cheap to fix.. I've been driving a work vehicle that's a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 with nearly 197,000 miles and it seems pretty strong and hasn't left me stranded in the 2,000 miles I've put on it. Although, I'd like to stay under 75,000 on a used, new-to-me truck.

Thoughts?

We've always had trucks. A year ago we traded in our F-150 and got a SUV. We got an 08 Escalade. I wouldn't go back to a truck now. I absolutely love having the back for groceries especially when it's hot out or raining. We have an 8 year old daughter and another baby girl due in September, so I know I will really like having the SUV. We still have a dually for pulling our trailer. I'm glad we didn't get another truck.

I have a Toyota Rav 4 and love it. My husband even loves it! I can put like 12 sacks of feed in the back of that thing (if I have to-not advised lol) and it is super roomy! For a small thing it is so comfortable. Mine is a 2015.

I drive a chevy tahoe as my every day vehicle. I haul my toddler around in it, make grocery runs, drive back and forth to work..  Its a very comfortable and conveinent vehicle. When my husband is using the truck I can hook it to my 2 horse trailer and away I go.

I had a Chevy Traverse and when it started spending too much time in the shop (a mechanic at our dealer told me several years ago it was made to be a "throwaway vehicle" and would start having problems at 100,000 miles...he was right.), I traded it on a Tahoe.  No regrets.  The suspension on it is so much heavier, it handles our crappy roads a lot better and will hopefully hold up better--I kept wearing out struts in the Traverse.  We live on a dirt road too, and the highway that runs out here is almost as bad.  I thought about going back to driving my pickup as my daily driver, but having the closed in, air conditioned cargo area/3rd row is too nice to give up.  And it's smaller and easier to park in town.

I got an Explorer about 4 months ago....I really wanted a F-150 but was a little far out of my budget unless I went with a plain jane package. Now that I have the Explorer, I know there's no way I want the 150. I absolutely LOVE having the back for groceries or any big stuff like bags of feed, etc. I folded the seat down while moving around wedding stuff 2 months ago and I haven't put the back seat back up again yet LOL. I was just telling hubby the other day that I am so glad I wasn't able to go to the 150. We have a baby on the way and I wanted the back for strollers, pack and plays, etc. Don't know that I would want all that sliding around an open box with a 150.

It doesn't really matter what you drive. If you don't have the correct tires for the conditions, you're going to have problems. The old VW Beetle will go practically anywhere if you have the right tires on it.

I have a Subaru outback that is a beast on greasy gravel roads, has long legs in the snow and can haul feed, shavings, kids, dogs and groceries- all at the same time!  It cleans up well for going to town, too.  I love it!

Yes, they're pretty cool!!!

The 4Runner is on a truck chassis, where as the Highlander & I think the Rav are on car chassis' so
they ride a little smoother!! Either way I want one!!! I work for a used vehicle lot, that is a subsidiary of a Ford, Dodge & Jeep store whose sister store is a Toyota dealership, so I will get one eventually!!!

I have made it places with my outback that well.....most people don't know there's road there....(I do not need to tell stories on myself) but that was before I had new tires-oh imagine the places I can go now....good mileage-24 mpg ( I have a heavy foot-80 on the interstate) nice ride-you can get them with the fancy schmancy package or cut down version plus, everyone that i know that has had a subaru say they last forever-just an FYI my daughter will be taking mine to college (she's 13 now

When I got my Rav4, I had asked for a 4runner but they were just too expensive for our budget and the Rav4 gets way better gas mileage. But if I could afford one, I would have one for sure!

Toyota Rav4's are wonderful vehicles! I would highly recommend them, and anything Toyota. But we have had several Rav4's and haven't had any major issues with any of them. Some may not like me for saying this, but the Rav4 is probably twice as dependable as Subaru with less inherent problems (sorry Subaru lovers). I have driven both, and the Toyota Rav4 is my pick hands down. But I've literally grown up in a car family (my brother is a mechanic, my dad is a car dealer, I've probably driven more different types of cars than you can throw a stick at) and the ones with the fewest problems are our favorites. Therefore, Toyota wins in our minds.   Now if you were asking about trucks and cars, I'd give you a different opinion, but the Rav4 is our favorite SUV. I also believe the Rav4 is top rated in Consumer Reports for its class of vehicle.

We bought a Fusion 3-4 years ago that I love. Gets 30mpg on the highway and 25 city. I love the mileage, and the roominess in it. I've thrown bags of shavings and feed in the trunk with the back seats folded down.

I am hoping to one day trade up to the Explorer with the 3rd row seat though. My fusion gets me by, but I just prefer something that sits up a hair higher and has the 3rd row for extra passengers!

Our Escape has 350,000 miles and is a complete beast. A champ through snow. My husband uses it as his work truck now. It's perfect - not too big, good MPG, 4x4, lots of room for tools, hay, bags of shavings, etc. I think I have a picture somewhere of us hauling 10 bags of shavings in it, and that wasn't laying down the backseat. You can easily park it too, which is nice when I drive it downtown.

I'm with you. I don't like Toyota, I don't think they make good looking vehicles either. Just not a fan, but people are free to buy what they want.

I think it's funny how a lot of people think Toyota is the only vehicle that holds their value.

All Diesels hold their value, but once you get into gas burners, a toyota tacoma or tundra will  sell faster and for mo money than an f150 any day of the week.

+1

I love my Encore.  The only downside is that it can be small for road trips and multiple people in it.  It is a smaller SUV but handles great and can take a dirt road like nothing.

My wife drives a 4runner and absolutly loves it.  Real 4 wheel drive, decent gas mileage, plenty of room.  I always wondered what the hype was about toyota...now I know.
Yes, they're pretty cool!!! The 4Runner is on a truck chassis, where as the Highlander & I think the Rav are on car chassis' so they ride a little smoother!! Either way I want one!!! I work for a used vehicle lot, that is a subsidiary of a Ford, Dodge & Jeep store whose sister store is a Toyota dealership, so I will get one eventually!!!
Am I the only one who HATES toyota?  Everything about them...hate.  The thought of driving another one gives me hives.

Why? lol

I love my Rav4! I sure was hoping when it got the hail damage they would total it so I could go get another one! The last few Toyotas I have bought have been interest free. And when I traded my Corolla I figured I wouldn't get much for a trade in value because I thought they would only give what was owed on it, nope it held onto resale value pretty well.

I love the Venza (they don't make it anymore) ugh.

Dad traded a '01 Tundra in and what they gave him for it shocked every single one of us. Didn't have a ton of miles on it but the paint was shot and the leather seats (but it sits in the sun at work without getting moved much).

Very few vehicles hold their value as well as toyota.  Just another reason I'm on the bandwagon! lol
After having driven Fords my entire life, I can say with some historical authority that Fords do hold their resale value. Especially the diesels.

All Diesels hold their value, but once you get into gas burners, a toyota tacoma or tundra will  sell faster and for mo money than an f150 any day of the week.

Just bought a new (to us) F150 Supercrew. They hold their value as well as if not better than Toyota or Nissan. Ford does not have the title of #1 selling half ton truck for 38 year straight for nothing!

I bought a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport recently. Only reason was because I was way surprised with the comfort level, the gas mileage, and the price. Plus it has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. My Toyota only had a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and I drive that in a year. I paid $22,000 before taxes and it gets 24-28mpg in town.
I purchased a turbo, cold air intake, blow off valve, and a few other "fun" things for it. SO said I will get better mileage once the turbo is on since the engine won't have to work so hard, it'll have the turbo to help it.
I still have both my 90s model Fords and my SO has a 2013 Dodge 1500. So I think I'm golden on having something to haul with. LOL

The Santa Fe also has storage under the back area. So it basically doubles the storage in the back hatch compartment. I can haul feed, saddles, strollers, anything. The back seats fold flat too. I was really surprised with Hyundai. I always thought they were "Throw away cars". But the warranty transfers if I sell. I basically bought it for it's warranty LOL

The majority of Toyotas are made here in America and employ many employees, very few parts are made in Japan (only a few paint pigments come from there). The cooperate office is now in Plano.

daisycake123 - 2016-05-11 7:19 PM if the arcadia has a 3.6 engine they have plenty of problems with the 3.6, those engines wher also in saturn gmc and chevy. you can look on the internet they also have tranmission problems.

This...I work at a shop and now they are getting higher miles on them there are a lot of issues mostly due to lack of oil changes since they set the oil life monitors out so long on them.  Best piece of advise for anyone, any car is stick to the 3K-4K oil changes.  Especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle long term.  Oil change is cheap preventative maint!!

Tahoes are great, expect to do suspension work on them but the motors are tried and tested.

No debate or argument intended. Only reading comprehension as in CORPORATE PROFITS from Toyota and Nissan Sales goes back to Japan. Because these two companies are Japanese owned and therefore based in Japan......................

Interesting how demographics work. No one drives Toyota trucks around here. It's all Fords, Chevys, or Dodges. Lots more Fords though, since there are two Ford plants in Louisville.

I don't think I would want to go back to a truck for a daily driver after having an SUV. I have a 2008 Cadillac SRX and it is SO much easier to get grain, groceries, just about anything in and I never have to worry about the rain. It does NOT get very good gas mileage though..... - My 1-ton diesel beats it - how sad is that?

My husband isn't too keen on my idea of a 4 door half ton truck for me to drive back and forth. He likes the idea of an SUV, I think. I'm test driving a Dodge Durango for the weekend and I like it so far. Except there doesnt seem to be much headroom and it's black - both inside and out. Living on a dirt road and with two little boys I'm afraid it will be constantly showing dirt..

 Thanks everybody for their replies!

You can look up the cubic feet of any vehicle online.
I bought a silver suv since we live on a dirt road. Two weeks and it still looks great! lol I had a black car before and had to wash it at least twice a week.

WrapN3MN - 2016-05-11 12:30 PM I got an Explorer about 4 months ago....I really wanted a F-150 but was a little far out of my budget unless I went with a plain jane package.

I also LOVE my Explorer. It's an 05 with 202,000 miles on it and going great! I had a 1994 Explorer several years ago and we drove it until the transmission or engine (can't remember which) went out. Dad sold it cheap and a couple months later, we saw it in a Wal-Mart parking lot so the buyer had fixed it up and was driving it. My current Explorer has the 3rd row seating but isn't super huge so that's nice. I can keep track meet clothes, coats & blankets in the back seat and still have room for 500 pounds of grain behind it with the third row seats folded down. The 1994 Explorer was the smaller size but equally awesome.

I've also had Jeep Cherokees and liked them but they don't have much leg room in the back seat. My tall family members did not enjoy riding in the back seat of the Jeeps but the Explorer is comfortable for them.

I haven't read the other responses, but I recently traded in a 2012 Buick Verano with 40,000 miles on it (LOVED that car!) for an 04 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi 5.7L with 4WD and 90,000 miles on it. Let me tell you, this truck is a beast. It's massive, hauls exactly what I need to, and is gas. I fill up about once a week, more if I haul somewhere, and it costs me between $40 and $48. I forsee another Dodge in my future, but I'm going to drive this one into the ground. A friend of mine uses a Ram 2500 to haul her horses, and its got 350,000 miles on it. Still going strong.
