OK, I know many of you have several foals.
My mare is a few weeks out Per the calendar but showing signs that she may be early.
so, I'm preparing the loafing shed b/c we have another great chance of rain ( GRRR) coming the next 2 weeks..
I just put shavings down and then I just happen to read DON'T use shaving use straw.
How many have foaled out babies with shavings? or should I just go get straw and lay it down

we just foaled out our first, we thought she was coming in feb, mare bagged up then, nope held on to that baby until 3-22, foaled her about 8pm in the stall which is sand bottom and the pelletized bedding, no problems.... i kept putting her in the turnout to have baby out there but never happened...

Im no expert! My mare had hers in the pasture even though she did have access to the barn. I would say the only reason they say "No shavings" is because the small pieces could get in the baby's mouth and nose? Idk

I foal on straw.
I think the theory behind shavings is they are wet and the small shavings stick to them and can pack into thier nostrils as they are coming out. I have never used shavings in my stalls though because we have tons of straw so its way easier and more cost effective for me.
I do see newborn foal pictires on straw all the time, I guess its just a personal choice I am not sure what to say! There are cons to straw too such as they will eat it looking for grain, but I do pefer straw all around myself.
