I'm a small rider and I have a very powerful horse. I consider myself a good rider but when he rates down and turns the barrel it throws me off my seat. I plan to start doing workouts to improve my core strength but what are you're thoughts on using the Martha Josey Sure Grip/Magic Seat? I don't want to look like a weenie using it but thought maybe it'd help me stay centered when he is powerhousin around the barrel. I'm open to any other suggestions for riding a powerhouse. Thanks.

I think if it helps you ride your horse better and stay centered then go for it may who cares what anyone else thinks! But if also suggest doing the core strengthening exercises as well so eventually you won't have to use the seat.

It would make me nervous I don't like seeing kids wear them. What if something happens and your horse falls etc. ? Will it release you or are you going to be trapped or hanging like a rag doll until someone catches him? Just my thoughts.... Maybe do a lot of riding without stirrups and other excercises for strength like you mentioned

My Grandpa always would make us exercise them bareback. One of my best rodeo horses was hard to ride up into the turn bc he would drop out from under you. I rode him bareback all the time to exercise and it kept the right muscles tight and helped balance.

Give it a try and see how you feel in it, and who gives a rats bu** what others may think about you riding in a Magic seat this is for you not anyone else.
And is the saddle the right fit for you? If the seat is not the right size for you it can really mess with your balance in the turns.

I agree. Seat size is important. I was in too large of a seat and it totally threw me off balance and worked against my confidence. Now, with the correct seat size, I stay put and am a much more aggressive rider because I am not worried about getting pitched.

Core strength is also good. I've been trying to work on that also. I say try out the magic seat...you may find it doesn't work for you.

They break away if you fall, may not for tiny kids as they don't have enough weight.  The straps around your legs velcro to the seat.

They do make me nervous. If your horse goes down, you can break away but I don't like not having a huge option if I need it. I don't use rubber bands for the same reason, never really had an issue keeping my feet in either. But I don't like anything that makes me feel like my options are limited.

BUT, if that doesn't bother you then go for it. I wouldn't care what people thought. They are more and more popular now so I don't see it even being noticed all too often.

If you can find one to try first do it. I bought one, I had torn my hamstring and just didnt have the leg strength so I bought one. Used it at one barrel race and I couldnt get it off and in the garbage fast enough. I did not like it at all.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your feedback! I think I'm going to take the suggestions of working on my core and riding bareback. If these options don't work then I'll try other options. I love the responses that said don't worry what others think! :)

I can tell you from "first hand" experience the majic seat is worth a million dollars.  From the same "first hand" experience I can tell you they will release.  Martha wears one herself.  You can't worry about what anyone else says or think.

I have a very large gelding 16.3 h who thinks he is a 14 h cutter in his turns :) It is a big drop then he launches out .. If I don't go sideways I get dashboarded.. Until I switched to treeless. Do planks for your core .

Use what ever tool in the tool box that works for your particular situation. I use a magic seat. Getting a little older. I Work out twice a week for core Strength plus muscles. My horse still pulls his little stunt every once in a while and can spin out from under me. The s
Magic seat holds me just for that moment I need !

I use one occasionally on a horse I know is powerful. And my kid uses one on a 1300 # powerhouse that flings her. We are both only 90#'s
She rides well But It helps make her Be able to stay with her horse. Defiantly a plus in a hard to ride one. And it will rip off is something should happen. I've seen it multiple times for myself.

Wow, sounds like those that are using this are riding powerful horses like mine. He is 16.1 and all there and people that watch us race have commented how powerful he is. For those that have bought the magic seat/sure grip where did you purchase it from? Thanks!

I got my first one from Martha Josey years ago. I somehow lost it. I just bought a Sure Grip from Teskey's. My horse is a DTF and 16.3H and the fastest thing I have ever sat on....plus turns like he is a 15H horse. He is extremely smooth running and his turns...but super quick. I thought I would never use one of these, but he is scary powerful. They will let go or loosen. I did ride in a Bob Marshall for a long and that really helped. However, I had trouble getting forward and leaving the barrel. Like anything else, it is a 'tool' to be used correctly.

I used one on a horse that ran faster than I could ride. turned faster too. You can come out pretty easy. I'd forget sometimes and get off the horse without taking them off my legs. As some have mentioned with a kid that weighs 50 lbs may be an issue, but I weight quite a bit more than 50 lbs! Ha. What scares me more than that is rubber bands. I watched someone get caught up with being unseated, but not falling off, and she couldn't get her feet out of the stirrups to get out of the horses way. It was a wreck.

I haven't needed to use the rubber bands. My feet stay put. But he has so much torque and I'm small that my butt doesn't always stay put! He hasn't lost me yet but I feel if it helped me keep my seat when he goes into overdrive we'd have a better pattern.

If you got your barrel horse news yesterday, the young man on the cover is riding with a Magic Seat. If you can't beat them join them.

I sold mine after 3 days because 1) it doesn't work on my Tammy tireless and 2) I was too strong for it. I could post right out of it and I felt that it was not nearly "sticky" enough. I am 5'5, 115 lbs and I have a super powerful horse so I was really hoping it worked. I practice holding my core really tightly or hold the horn instead.
