Location: Idaho | I know, not a barrel racing question but I was wondering what you all use for a healthy coat? When I first moved to Oklahoma, my hair became super dry and I didn't know why. Never had that problem.. well a stylist told me it was because of the wind, as it is always windy! Well that made since.. went out and got a leave in conditioner, and it helped immensely. Now I see my gelding has a super dry coat.. he has really bad dandruff and he's out in the pasture all the time, so I know its probably for the same reason.
I know some people use corn/vegetable oil for coats. Was wondering what you guys use or recommend? |

This is what I use too..love it! I noticed a pretty significant difference when I started using it. |

Corn/vegetable oil is an old additive from 50 years ago. We fed it to help our horses shed quicker when I was a kid but would not recommend it now. The products listed above are a lot better and won't hurt your horse's stomach. |

He also gets groomed a lot and if he is outside he wears a Kensington UV sheet. His hair coat is every bit as nice as the $60K show horses we see at the shows. I bet I have 1/2 the time and expense into his body condition too. |

| Mine get DAC oil daily 1-4oz depending on the horse and they are all shining like pennies. My SO won't feed it to his (cheap, old school, whatever) and his have noticeably less bloom - all other feed/hay is the same aside from the oxymax mine also get. |

I second this!! I don't have the hair and coat blend in mine but my horses look AMAZING on THE muscle mass!! |

I have my other two on Dac Bloom and the Oil and they look great. If they needed more I would definitely put them on the Glänzen. |

Thank you everyone for your replies, I will have to check them out! I have thought about doing an all around supplement, but my boy just turned 5.. I would be concerned about giving him something for his joints at his age? I'd worry it will effect his growth because he is not fully grown yet? He's my first baby (from the ground up) so I'm still learning about that.
Also, I don't think his skin is that dry! I'd cry if he rubbed out his mane.. it is so long and pretty lol I think he's my first horse that I've ever had that has a long, thick mane. I'd like to keep it! haha |

| Flax Seed. 1/2 cup twice a day in their grain. Have used it since I was a kid showing jumpers & that was in the 60's & 70's. Dang I'm old LOL Seriously it is healthy for the horse & helps with feet condition as well. Much less expensive than todays supplements & no oily residue :) |

| Wash'em down with human shampoo and then use human hair conditioner ...
rinse well. This will put some oil back in their hair and clean out their sweat pores ...
Feed wise .. cup full of cracked/chopped corn in their feed ... 30 days horse will be slick and shiney ..
Whole Flax seed ... half a cup to 1 cup per day ... will oil'em up within weeks and if you rub your horse with your hand after he has shined up ... you will get dirty oily residue caked on your hand ... this is how well whole flax seed works ..

| You can feed a supplement for coats and one thing for everything else. I found it was cheaper in the long run to just feed Platinum Performance. All of my horses stay shiny all summer in extreme Texas sun and all winter when they are hairy.

Location: Phoenix | I'm feeding 1 lb Renew Gold and Platinum Performance. I fed 2 scoops for 6 mos, but now I'm feeding 1 (1/2 recommended amount) to make it last longer. Last summer (first AZ summer) my horse got really flakey, dry skin and was super itchy. He rubbed a section of his mane to the point where there was raw flesh! Vet recommended PP so I'm giving it a go for a year to see how it works out for him. I know PP had a skin/allergy formula but is it even more expensive than what I'm paying joe and for less doses.

Location: mi | I love Cocosoya for Uckele. Can be found at most local farm stores so thats nice and convenient. Also make sure to rinse your horse off after riding to rid them of any sweat but no shampoo as that drys the skin. You want all those oils left alone as much as possible.

IMO any good all around supplement should help out the coat.
One specifically for the coat, I would reccomomend Mirra Coat. Helps clear up any skin conditions and gives them a nice high gloss shine to the coat. |

Location: South Dakota | 3/4 cup ground Flaxseed every day, along with Forco...gives them bloom, and strengthens their hooves. It takes a month or so for you to see the difference, be faithful in feeding it and you will see results.
