Took a horse to a 3 day barrel race she acted strange all weekend and ran nearly 1.5+ second off (pretty consistent horse) she acted like she didn't feel good and just didn't want to run. After our run she would cock her hip and pull her tail to the side felt like her guts were hard/strained. She just acted uncomfortable. When we left from home Friday to go to race I noticed her poop was runny but looked ok it remained loose all wknd. I gave her ulcer gaurd fri and sat (have in the past at big shows as precaution but she has never been diagnosed w ulcers) she is on previcox gets it every day and has been on it for years. She has acted like this before usually after a big show and it last for maybe 5 min but this time I had to give her banamine to make her confortable(which ended up not helping) I have taken her off of previcox since Saturday just in case. But never has she acted like this for a whole weekend especially running that much off. The last few wks she has lost weight I had to give her dex and between that and wanting grass over hay. She had been put on dex due to a respiratory infection as well as antibiotics. But this has been nearly two months ago. She runs 1-2 shows a weekend and local shows she has never acted like this! I feel like it's only big shows no clue what's going on here maybe kidneys? could it be the ulcer gaurd ?

Weight loss and uncomfortable does sound like ulcers.  I would have her seen by a vet and evaluate your feed program.

I didn't think about female issues hmmmm
I would think if she had ulcers the ulcer gaurd would work but now I'm afraid to give it after this wknd. I mean ulcers make sense I plan on getting her scoped it's hard finding a vet locally that had the equipment thanks for the input

If she has respiratory issues ask vet bout doing a trachea (sp?) They can scope clean and still be sick. Good luck

I would think the ulcer guard would make her feel better too, maybe depends on how bad they are if she has them.  You would need to teat het for a couple of weeks to get rid of them.  My horse went off his grain, vets scope was broken so he told me to treat him and see if he feels better-2 doses and he was wantingto eat again.  I took all mine off grain after that, although grain is not the cause it aggregates the situation.

Colonic ulcers and yes, the extended use of Previcox will drive it and thats why the banamine made no difference. I just went through this with a older mare who we had on Previcox for 2 years. Your horses symptoms are a exact mirror what we went through.

Anytime I buy ulcer guard I give all doses in a row but it never made a dif and that's why I'm skeptical and decided to ask on here. Also would the respiratory problem have anything to do with this? Her raspy throat cleared up w antibiotics she seems to breathe much better after all that minus allergies that she's always had

Please read this.  Alot of information and please dont dismiss it. I'd have your horse scoped for RDC ( Colonic ulcershttp://www.ivis.org/proceedings/navc/2005/LA/067.pdf?LA=1

It's amazing how horses lived through lions, tigers, bears, wolves and ulcers for 35,000 years before we came along...

I don't think we realize how stressful it is for horses to live in our man-made environments. We do the best we can, and so do they, but we are missing something sometimes. I wish I knew what it was, or knew someone who did. Finding what stresses my horse is causing me stress, lol.

Agree, I had a horse on previcox for 18 months and ulcer products did nothing for him. He needed the previcox for pain but after 18 months the previcox ended up having some serious side effects. It was way better than bute for that length of time but eventually even previcox can cause some pretty serious issues. I have read on here about giving time off from previcox and starting it back up working but I don't remember the protocol. I had to make a decision with my horse, previcox causing pain and problems or his RF foot issue causing pain so I put him down.

No, not at all. lol That horse is still going strong and running well! This was a horse I ran for 10 years that had a sharp part of his navicular bone and it was basically sawing his DDFT in half. When he retired at age TWELVE (Sad I know), he was on prevocox daily. Worked wonders until it gave him issues but he was in a lot of pain other wise.

No, they didn't get processed feeds before we started containing them and using them for sport.

Agreed. Previcox no matter how you slice it is a NSAID. It is a better longer term alternative then bute or banamine, but eventually the end results are the same. The mare we had on long term previcox we lost just a month ago to the RDC brought on by the long term use of Previcox. I wish we would have recognized the signs and symptoms of RDC sooner though but had never experienced it before. I didnt know what the deal was at first and neither did the vet here.  Symptoms were exact mirror of OP's horse.

Horses in the wild are not kept in stalls fed hay and grain, hauled to shows/races all over, go through the stress of training and hauling and competing and then givin the myraid of meds/NSAIDS we give our horses.

There is a fecal test that can be done to determine if there are ulcers. My vet charges $55 for this. Much easier and cheaper than scoping.

Processed from what? Plants....? Every autumn they would browse along and eat the tops (seeds) from oats and wheat and other plants.... Grain on the stem...
I find it truly amazing how an animal so large and powerful as a horse can be as fragile as they are...

Horses also live longer now, since we are more educated on what we can do to keep them healthy. ;-)

My vet said that the fecal test is extremely unreliable ( If your referring to the Succeed test).

Good to know. I have heard it can only tell if a horse has a certain gastric ulcer. It won't pick up on the rarer type ( forget the name) and poop must be fresh.

Yea I'm not sure what about the test made it unreliable but she told me not to waste my money. Same vet said that the lameness locator was also not as reliable as a trained eye/good vet for lameness. I guess at a AAEP conference they did a head to head test of lameness vets and locator and the vets did better at finding problems than the locator did. Its all a tool. lol

Dex, banamine, antibiotics and previcox sounds like it overloaded her system. Ulcer guard will not work when you give it the day you leave, it takes a day or 2 to build up in their system in order to take effect. I'd look at getting a CBC ran, especially after being on all those Meds recently. Kidney and liver are 2 that'd take the damage from all the meds
