I've never had to use bute before, but it was recommended for my mare by my farrier. What's the best form (paste, tablet, gel) to give it in? Is there anything I should know about it before I give it to her? I know it can be hard on their stomach so I think 5 days is the max you should give it consecutively? And will I need a prescription for it?
Yes I know I sound clueless, but I kind of am about this so thanks for your help!!

Call your vet, do you have a good relationship with them? My favorite way to give it is in tablet form. Put 1 or 2 tablets in your hand and cover it with grain and they'll eat it right out of your hand. Paste is good unless you have a horse bad with paste. Powder is ok too but if they're on it for any length of time they figure out its in their grain.

If your vet has powder form thats a great way to give in food and you dont have to crush it up.. she should be fine .. others say use this and that But ive never had a issue with it short term use.

I personally prefer the paste form, but it really depends on what will be the easiest way for your particular horse. I have never had problems with relatively short term use of bute, but do make sure horses always have 24/7 access to roughage to help with acid absorption in the gut.

My older mare gets bute occasionally but she is a picky eater. The only way I can get it into her is using a syringe and mixing the powdered bute with some applesauce. If your horse is picky I would just go for the paste in the tube since you will probably have to force it into her anyway

Suggestion---If u use bute also give pro bios or ulcer guard etc paste along with it to help the stomach.
Speak w your vet on possible treatment
Ask vet about previcox also. Less on stomach problems.
