I'm really frustrated with not having a horse to compete on or just ride for that matter. My idea is to trade a couple of my youngsters, a 3yo and I have several that are 2yo and yearlings for a well started horse or even an older horse. My side of the trade can be combined in any manner to make the trade acceptable for both parties. I realize that trainers are wanting horses old enough to start.

Do you think it is an unreasonable request?? Seems that a lot of trainers/people no longer want to start horses under saddle any longer. Got my 3yo started then got hurt on the farm and thought it would be easy to send him to someone else to keep him going but that didn't happen. So he has been standing in the field for a month and it will be several more weeks before I get healed up.

My husband came up with the trade idea..........what do you guys think? I guess most people would much rather have a cash sell. If I could get some youngsters sold then I would buy outright. I also think the market for youngstock is down.

sounds fair to me. Of course it depends on breeding and quality of young horses. So assuming they are nicely bred and the trainer has what you want, I don't see a problem. You sound like you are willing to trade a couple or more for a nice older horse. If I were a futurity trainer and wanted some nice prospects to train and had a older horse that I didn't need I would make the trade.

The trainer who starts my horses does this often. Will take one plus cash or two colts in trade for a finished horse. I think it's a great idea!

O.k., so maybe it is not such a crazy idea afterall. Now that I'm a over 50 rider, I just don't have the desire to keep breaking and training. It has been hard to find a decent colt starter in my area. I broke my arm and hurt my shoulder falling in the sow barn....the older we get the longer it takes to heal! Going to have to start my 3yo over, he is no deadhead but he is not a nut either.

Hopefully, I can find a trade deal soon.

Thanks everyone.
