Location: Somewhere around here | For a while now I wanted to buy a NICE tack set; something from Heritage Brand, Running Roan Tack, or another nice quality place. But I've always held myself back because I didn't think I was "good enough" and I think there are a few others out there that think the same way I do. It's ridiculous! Like from the last thread "Judging someone by their tack" it's stated from many people that if you have nice things, people will stare and look politely at your tack instead of judging you.
Now, personally I haven't bought a nice tack set because of my latest horse we were having a lot of problems and I see the girls who are winning (or at least consistent and having fun) with tack ranging from plain to glitz galore. To me, it makes me afraid that I don't "deserve" a nice tack set until I'm up to the level I want to be.
Are there any other people out there that think like this? If so, why do we think that way? We certainly wouldn't tell a friend the same thing! Like I said before, it's ridiculous, even if it's hard to make ourselves believe we are "good enough". |

| My stuff is expensive because it's quality that will last after I'm dead. I'm not a big fan of bling.
If you don't think you're good enough or deserve the nice set, spend the money on a clinic with someone really good or at the vet for your horse.
Set a goal, "When I win the 2D, or 3D, or whatever, I'll buy the set without guilt as a reward." |

Lol... I feel you! For a long time I went without the tack I wanted because I didn't want to attract attention to myself. I didn't think I was good enough and even felt a little embarrassed. I like pretty stuff but I do feel like I need to earn it... Or rather, my horse needs to earn the right to stand out. It's just a personal thing for me.

| Everyone has their own set of circumstances. Not everyone wants or can afford a top 1D horse, and that's okay. If you barrel race to make friends, then you will be very lonely. Most people run barrels because they love it and they love their equine partners. Do and buy what makes YOU happy. If YOU want a nice tack set...buy it! To hell with what others might think. |

My horse was the only thing I could afford at the time. And I loved him wether he got in the higher d's or not! I've learned that people esp barrel racers can be vicious, and will say some crazy things to put others down! Let them know they can't effect you by killin em with a smile! It'll drive them crazy!! its kinda funny hearing the lame stuff that gets back to you! Lmbo!! but Know this....
The problem is not you, it's Them!
I have a good quality leather tack set I spend just over 200.00 for and I tell you what I've had it for close to ten years! I recently updated the conchos and made it look totally different! With only 40.00!

Yes, it's silly, but my 'good' ones get blue stuff. The blue CSI, blue bell boots that match it, etc.
When they start acting like a barrel horse they get their own leg gear.
Just games in my own mind.
My husband came around the corner to see my putting the blue CSI on Rio, and whistled out loud. "Things are getting serious, huh?" |

Location: Weatherford, TX | Does matching or expensive tack sets make you run any faster? No, it does not... The horse doesn't know what tack set you have on. LOL It looks pretty and nice to other barrel racers, but it doesn't make you run any faster.
ETA....My really good horses get the really good tack. I don't want a 'really show off ' tack set on a colt. You never know what they will do to humble you. I don't want to be remembered for the tack on a colt that can do anything out of the normal good run. I just don't want to be remembered for a really pretty tack set and a colt/horse that didn't work.
You also have to have your own goals to do what you can do and what you can afford. If you have a 2/3/4D horse and you are happy with what you're doing and can afford a nice expensive tack set, then go for it. Be happy with what you are doing, set your own goals and not worry about other people.

Yep this is how I've always been, but it's also how my mom is.
They're pretty special when they have their own stuff.
My husband is the same way now that I think of it.
For me, it's not that I feel like I don't deserve nice things, it's more the horse hasn't earned his own tack. They still have good quality stuff. But I also don't care what other people think. I might use my $500 set, or I might use the headstall hubby made out of scrap leather, whatever lol. |

Location: Southern Michigan | I'm a bling lover through and through, but surprisingly my tack isn't. I have two very nice quality simple looking saddles and a couple good bridles that I have worked very hard to work up to. I say I would like a nice bling tack set one day, but haven't got around to finding/designing the right one. So I'm starting to believe I just don't want it bad enough and I'd rather have my mare speak for herself. I grew up in pleasure where I've had judges tell me if they had two equally good horses, they'd pick the fancier bling. And that's why I quit pleasure! All it is, is someone's opinion. I'd rather have the clock be the judge. So don't base it off of what others think. If it makes you happy and feel good, do it. I can't tell you how many girls I see with bling that can't ride worth a darn. So clearly it doesn't make you a better rider or faster. Plus most of the knock offs I see are so poorly made I can imagine they only hinder the horses. Quality not Quanity! |

The only reason I don't have nicer tack anymore is quite simply bc it doesn't fit in my budget. When it does again, I don't care if I'm winning it or placing in the 4d, I'll buy what I want. |

I started doing what a friend (thanks for teh tip Mandabear) has been doing years ago. She saved up everything they won and at the end of the season she had enough to buy a new saddle. So, last year we won enough to get a new Bob Marshall that I had made exactly like I wanted too. Now we won most everything in the 4 and 5D, some in the 3D and once we got a 2D check. But guess what... the money spends the same..... So, if you can afford it, and want it.... buy it and use it. And best of all, enjoy it! |

I feel the same way but mine is more about my horse. I have let him stand and waste because I am afraid of what people will say when I run him......not as good as the girls that had him before me and because of who his sire is. And this has really bothered me and kept me at home.....still is. I know people expect a smoking run if they know him and know his breeding but I just cannot make him run like they did....he is push style. I love him and he is easy to ride.....he was a gift to me from a friend....she bought him and a very nice trailer for me....and their are people that know this and have said some pretty mean things about it.....and it has almost killed my love for the sport....so I feel your pain.....I don't feel like I am "good enough" to jockey this horse and evidently others feel the same way. |

| Use what you want. I stress QUALITY over bling. Bling is popuLat so everyone and their brother thinks they can make quality tack. Stick with the known makers like you listed, heritage, running roan, etc. don't cheap out.
My stuff is pretty plain for now, I've just got other things to spend money on and I have good quality working equipment. I do have a wicked beaded design in mind when my little horse earns it though. |

To the OP, I have blingy tack sets (my husband is good to me). Am I fast? Nope, but she isn't a 1D horse and I am ok with that. We continue to have fun, get better and I write down my times and aim to beat my last time. Who cares what others think? "Haters gonna, hate, hate, hate..." |
