What are some old wives tales about horses that you'd like to share with us?? I don't know too many but I have some ;)
  1. Horses with coon tails are born to run like their "tail is on fire"
  2. The less white a horse has on their feet the better "1 white foot, ride him for your life. 2 white feet, give him to your wife. 3 white feet, sell him if you can. 4 white feet, no good for beast nor man"

Maybe not an old wives tale but one of my favorite:

For want of a nail a shoe was lost.

For want of a shoe a horse was lost.

For want of a horse a soldier was lost

For want of a soldier a battle was lost......

And all for the want of a nail.

OK, here is a few my grandparents lived by, don't know how many good horses they passed up cause of them but here goes.

1. A horse has to roll COMPLETELY over to be worth a darn , the ones that roll on one side, get up and roll on other are lazy and will never make anything.

2. If you pull up on a horses tail near the base, they better jerk it right back from you and tuck it between their cheeks. Any horse that just lets you pull it up won't know how to use their hind in and will quit working pulling steers.

3. If you have a sore footed horse, peeing on the foot will harden it and take care of the pain... This one Ive tried. Horse wasn't happy but it was worth it.

4. Barrel horses always turn the first barrel better on the side their mane hair lays on.

I'm sure their are more, including hair Swirls, but who knows.. lo

I've heard a lot and my horse disproves just about every one of them lol. Most notably, that blue eye(s)=crazy. His old owner had someone pass on him because of his blue eye. Thank God they did cause I love him and his pretty eye.

Cowlicks/Swirls.... If they have one on the middle of their crest on both sides of the neck, than they are super smart & learn quicker than average.

Also swirls... The higher on the forehead, the smarter the horse & if there is two on the forehead high up-even smarter!  Now if it's low like a mule, I've heard the horse is the devil LOL

OH MY LANTA, I swear I've made jokes about my horses always working the first barrel best, which coincides with the side their mane lays on... Maybe I was really onto something there! lol

Cowboys are certainly the most superstitious bunch I've ever heard.

Can't change your horses name.

Can't lay your hat down, unless it's upside down.

Can't wear yellow.

It really does go on and on. I've heard them say so many ridiculous ones. Lol!

Ohhhhh. I remember one... My old farrier would absolutely NOT take $50 bills. Literally made me write a check instead of pay cash (since I only had $50 bills). It meant some kind of extreme bad luck

Never eat popcorn before a rodeo, never let your hat touch a bed, some of them are flat out crazy!

Never set your hat on the bed, never lay it down right-side up (the luck will fall out), and if you're at a two-day event and win money the first day, don't pick up your check till the second day or you'll jinx yourself.

I swear by the name change one & also agree with the short go money... Plus... If you win a Buckle OR Prize, dont wear or use it till the following day.
When you get a New Hat, Your hauling partner, family member or best friend places money in the sweat band for good luck. You can never look at it, or you will never win anything again with that hat on.

Hey, I still will not wear yellow to a Rodeo & its my favorite color!

We changed my old mare's name from Autumn to Dee, and she ended up winning me a state top 10 award, multiple all around awards, and won me more events than I can count on 10 hands. I don't believe that one for a second! lol

No loose change in your pockets in the arena, I NEVER wear matching socks, no yellow, never use the same rubber bands--im very superstitious, I annoy myself sometimes
