At the time... I could not figure it out... My first horse... (2 year old filly. 1/2 QH 1/2 appy) had a quirk about puddles. We could take off on a ride... Wade through Little Piney river... Prance through Mill Creek or Gourd Creek... No problem... But...... Riding down a gravel road? I could not make her go through a puddle!! One time we came to a place she could have wove a path between puddles.. NOPE!!! I had to take her across the ditch to the fence-line to get past them.
Now I know. she could see the reflection.. Sometimes wavering because of the wind... (NOPE That might eat a horse!) But She used to puzzle me... Lots of things out there might eat a horse.... Sometimes, you can't be too careful when you're a horse..

You are right ...
Horses have great eye sight for distances but can't focus their eyes like humans do ..
especially up close ... they have no depth of perception ..

this is the reason you see a horse lower its head to sniff a log or
whatever before stepping over it or in it ..

and all those nose hairs you shave off ... each one talks to their brain ..
so keep a hairy nosed horse and be happy ...

It always irritates me when people want to pet one of my babies ..
first thing they want to do is rub them on the nose/nostrils ..
old baby jumps like he has been shocked ... lol

Watch this 4 day old colt see his reflection in the water tub and scoot
backwards ... lol
