Location: SE Louisiana | At the time... I could not figure it out... My first horse... (2 year old filly. 1/2 QH 1/2 appy) had a quirk about puddles. We could take off on a ride... Wade through Little Piney river... Prance through Mill Creek or Gourd Creek... No problem... But...... Riding down a gravel road? I could not make her go through a puddle!! One time we came to a place she could have wove a path between puddles.. NOPE!!! I had to take her across the ditch to the fence-line to get past them. 
Now I know. she could see the reflection.. Sometimes wavering because of the wind... (NOPE That might eat a horse!) But She used to puzzle me...  Lots of things out there might eat a horse.... Sometimes, you can't be too careful when you're a horse..
