Location: NE TX | I know I need to run my mare on Lasix, but I have heard and seen other threads about people giving different supplements to improve/help with oxygenation in the lungs and help lung function and help the Lasix prevent bleeding. What do y'all use?
I did see a thread the other day that talked about using a bunch of different stuff pre and post race like electrolytes, ventipulmin, ect. but what do y'all do on a daily basis to try and help them? I see OxyGen has some supplements they say help but want some testimonials before I buy. |

Location: NE Texas | I would use the Cur-OST products to get the inflammation in the body under control first and foremost. I have a horse who had very severe respiratory problems, though he isn't a confirmed bleeder. At one point he was on 8cc of Ventipulmin with Dex daily and still unable to take a deep enough breath to cough. The bleeding wouldn't cause a COPD or IAD issue, however a mild case of IAD or COPD or just slight restricted airway could cause a horse to bleed. The issue with the lungs that makes things difficult is that the damage cannot be reversed, so it's very important to get this issue managed as quickly as possible. Your horse may always have to run on lasix, the goal being to get the dose as low as possible, and ideally one day being able to go without it.
The plus to using these products is that your managing the inflammation throughout the body, not just airways and lungs. Many other conditions are the result of inflammation from arthritis, bone spurs, COPD/IAD, and more, so by managing the inflammation, you'll be also reducing the rate at which the boney changes occur.
I also believe that an event specific exercise plan is very important combined with a proper warm up can help some horses who have bled in the past overcome this considering there is no inflammation in the airways.

Location: Western Pa. | We use KC with Hespiridin from Big Ds. It is the one our vet recomended three years ago. It is not expensive and seems to work. We still use Lasix and he gets smart pak lite electrolites every day. All electrolites are not the same. You need to replace the potassium when using Lasix.Read the electrolite labels to make sure you are getting the right electrolites. |
