Location: Texas | Does anyone have a mare that hides their embryos/fetus when pregnant? She was bred back early May. Placed on regumate at day 6 and then ultrasounded around 25-30 days due to weather. Nothing was found, so she came off of regumate, and has yet to cycle. She is holding a CL. It's day 40ish now, still has a CL, and has yet to cycle. But still nothing to be seen on US. We're going to draw blood off of her next to check. However, this isn't the first time we've had trouble with this mare. Last year she gave us a hard time as well. Bred, took, lost it around day 20. Bred, took, started on regumate. Confirmed pregnant at day 20. At day 60, nothing to be found and was taken off of regumate. During the winter she was palpated by a second vet- deemed not pregnant. Come day 364 of breeding date, she built a bag. Day 365 palpated- pregnant! Her caslick was cut at 3pm and mare had sorrel filly at 830pm. Anyone have a mare that you can't see an embryo on after day 20?

I agree. But unfortunately the mare belongs to my mom and she lives in an area where there are no good equine vets. I have lived in this same area and learned this the hard way. I don't live or have control of what happens with this mare, I'm just going by what was told to me by her. I didnt feel like this should be happening again, which is why I'm here asking. |

yes some older mares need a caslick to stay clean, bred or no |

Yes all our mares are caslicks and almost all fillies off the track have one. It prevents them from sucking air etc. when running. It doesn't hurt them and just good prevention IMO |

Location: Way up North | Yes, I have a mare that hid it. To make a very long story short, 1st year doing AI (not 1st foal) we bred her, brought back for ultra sound deemed not pregnant, tried again and again not pregnant but kept holding fluid and couldn't get to to cycle so flushed her and what not and started early the following year. Bred in Feb. ultrasounded and deemed not pregnant, took her home and sent her to be live covered. Several vets and ultra sounds later and a round of lute that thankfully did not work the third or fourth vet ultasounded and found the fetus and in January she had a healthy filly. The filly is four this year and I have her 3 yr old full brother as well.
So yes, they can hide it and no I do not blame the vet because this particular mare saw a different vet the first year (we are pretty sure she was pregnant then, not just holding fluid) than the one that AI'd her the 2nd year and the next several that ultrasounded her and deemed her open as well. This mare is small too, 14 hh on a tall day but pretty thick. |

Location: Texas | It could also be her uterine conformation. Also, there is a time period where it becomes hard to ultrasound them, kind of between that 2 month to 4 month period they can start sinking below the pelvic rim and can be hard to palpate. That could also be why the last time during the winter they couldn't feel it. If the baby was really low, they may not have been able to reach her where it was sitting. |
