Ulcer prone horses are usually that way for a reason. There are horses that truly have a physical reason that makes it easier to develop a gastric ulcer, but most can be limited by a change in management. As I have often said, If your horse now has ulcers the first thing to do is treat them. At the same time, you should adjust the management of that horse to limit the chances of their return. Treatment is straight forward and should be done in consultation with your vet. Management to prevent return is another thing. First, see that the horses teeth are up to date and that she can chew comfortably. This provides saliva at a normal level which is the horses normal management tool to control ph in the stomach. Having part of the forage portion of the diet being alfalfa provides a benefit in raising the ph in the stomach. A slow feeding system for the roughage, or pasture, can be of great benefit as it allows the horse to create a constant mat of material in the stomach that restricts the exposure of the upper non-glandular tissue of the stomach from excess acid exposure during movement. As to Renew Gold, I would feed 1 1/2 pounds per day as long as the foal is on her. I also like Redmond Salt as the salt source. There may be some regional mineral needs depending on where you live. Feel free to call me (530 934 9300) if you want to talk about your program and what else, if anything, may be needed in your region.

My ulcer guy (as well as the rest) gets alfalfa hay and renew gold.
I did treat him for ulcers with CurOst, but it's been several months now and he's doing great. But he only goes 2-3 hours max without food in front of him. They're out on pasture at night, and by the time he finishes his alfalfa in the am, it isn't super long til hubby gets home and feeds again. It takes them 2-3 hours to eat.

So I guess my recommendation is feed it along with alfalfa lol.
Only my barrel horses get RG, but everything eats alfalfa, and we absolutely love it. All of the horses look and feel great. But my two that get RG have a little extra shine to them.

I really want to switch my horses to RG. I have a local tractor supply that has some in stock currently. I called them yesterday to make sure this is something they are keeping in stock and they told my they are "trying" to keep it in stock. Is there a reason that tractor supply has problems keeping this feed in stock as opposed to another feed? I really want to switch my horses to this but dont want to get stuck if no one local has it in stock.

They shouldn't have a problem keeping it in stock. Probably they just have to remember to keep ordering it...lol. It's available at every store, some just don't order it yet. But they definitely have the best price!!

I wish! I never dreamed they would look so much better. TSC has driven me nuts. I wish the small feed companies could get the TSC price. I have 3 TSC within an hour drive. One won't order at all. One tries to keep it in stock. One forgets to order. Problem is: TSC has not put Renew Gold on the planogram. There is not a spot in the store to put the bags. Most stores will not stock a product that can't go on the sales floor.  My last talk with RG said they were "working" on getting it on the planogram.

I tried feeding Renew Gold. But nobody, including Tractor Supply would keep stalk. I would buy everything they had (two whole bags), but couldn't get it again for atleast a month or so because I had cleaned out EVERYTHING they had. Lol. Really liked the feed, but I couldn't feed it consistently enough to really matter. The little mom and pop stores would have it more often, but still not consistently. So I had to change feeds. I was mainly looking to add weight and shine to my junker looking thoroughbred. I ended up on Senior feed, and loving it for my gangly dude.

Hopefully TSC will get their stuff together and keep it on the shelves.

Wow, that sounds exactly like my situation... I ended up driving another 40 miles to get to another TSC (4th on the list) that has RG on hand all the time.
I rainchecked 4 bags on April 27th in the store closest to me, and when I was about to run out I had to do something. 1 store (close to work) has issues ordering, and 1 other store just never has it in stock (don't know the reason).
When I asked the reason I had to drive all the way to Waco to get it I got told that their store wasn't as big and therefor not on the top of the list.... which I get is if it just a regular order to be put in the back. But if you have people consistently rain checking this feed I don't see how they can justify this. Also, a TSC in Liberty Hill also alsways has it on hand.... mmmm, yea, that is a metropolis right there....

If there is anything we can do to have it added to the planogram please let me know. I make sure I have enough on hand, and when I get low I just have to do a little roadtrip, but it sure would be nice not to have to do that...
ETA, after I asked about the situation all of a sudden, 2 days later they received my 4 bags... coincidence??? Me thinks not....

I already feed RG to my horses along with alfalfa and they are turned out on pasture 24/7. I absolutely love it. I have ZERO problems getting it in my area. Several local feed stores as well as TSC carry it.
This mare belongs to racehorse farm I manage and it's been a struggle trying to get the owners to allow me to change feeds. These mares are fed alfalfa and have ample pasture as well as coastal all day. There just wasn't any recommendation for feeding broodmares.

The Tractor Supply stocking situation is resolving itself slowly. I too would not feed a product that I could not get when I needed it. That said, we are doing everything in our power to get Renew Gold moved onto the planogram so that replenishment is automatic, and in stock volumes are higher. This would mean that customers would not need to rely on a person in the store to think to order it into stock. Changes are coming.

Thank you Win, I know a lot of people appreciate the effort you put into this.
It blows that we are depending on someone that is actually willing to do their job. Guess that is a bit rare nowadays.
But hopefully that will be over soon!

I love it! I have a 10th old air fern, a middle of the road 4yr old, and a harder keeper 5yrs old. They are all on 1 lb Renew Gold, 1-2 lbs whole oats, free choice coastal hay (I HATE coastal but that's all that is around here), DAC Orange, MSM, and I was using alfalfa pellets but was forced to switch to a more condensed protein source so now feed them all 1 lb Calf Manna. My middle of the road 4yr old is also on CurOst Stomach and that has helped him greatly!

I started Renew Gold because I wanted my horses off all processed grains with synthetic vitamins and junk in it and on a more natural regimen. At the time I was fighting to get my barrel horse sound and my harder keeper to hold weight, I had bought the Arab back last April and she was extremely thin. At the time I was feeding Bluebonnet Intensify Omega Force which I loved. So glad I made the change though! I work at a TSC and we have an entire pallet full of Renew Gold and it's on our Planogram.

Very stupid question but is this a supplement or a feed? Can you use it as a supplement vs a whole feed?

I am looking for weight gain.

Yes, it is a supplement or a feed. I could not resist that. To be more clear, the majority of our customers do not feed other feeds with it. They feed Renew Gold and hay or hay and pasture. If the hay is very poor some additional feed, some stabilized rice bran, or perhaps some oats can be feed. If this is done it is at a very low rate. I normally replace about 4+ pound of conventional feed with one pound of Renew Gold. I never feed more than two pounds of any concentrate feed at a time, because larger volumes than that can disrupt hind gut function. Most people know that I like some alfalfa in the diet. This does not effect Renew Gold efficiency, but is actually fed to slow transit time in the hind gut so that the grass hay part of the diet has a better chance of being properly broken down so that a larger percentage of the grass hay calories can be captured.

Here's a before and after.

Top= December 2014. Horse was in cold conditions....probably a 5/10 on my own made up body condition scale...definitely not a condition I was thrilled to see him in when he was dropped off.
Bottom= July 2015, 6 months later. Fed alfalfa, Bermuda grass gay and 1/2 lb RG.

I liked feeding it to but have the same situation with our local tracor supply.  I would drive 40 miles to another town to get it but they would not stock it regularly.

I'm wondering if it is an issue with the management at your individual Tractor Supply(s). I have 3 within 30 miles of me, and all of them keep it in stock for $29.99 (cheapest I've found it in a feed store is $35). I go through about 6-8 bags a month depending how many horses I have at the time, and I use it as a 'top dress' of about 1lb a day over Bluebonnet Total Advantage. I have only gone in once to pick some up that they were out, and they had it on the next truck. All 3 stores seem to always keep it on the shelf, but it is a big seller around here so thats likely why.

Call Tractor Supply (corporate) and ask for the Regional Director for where you live, and tell them your problem.  It worked for me!!  Renew Gold in stock all the time!  I think the local manager got a talkin-to.

We have been feeding Renew Gold for over a year now, and our Tractor Supply has been difficult to deal with, BUT we have started going in the store and having them order us 20 bags at a time.  With 20 bags then from TSC you get 10% off.  Not saying you necessarily want that much, but order 10 bags and when you get down to 4 go in there and order more.  That is just what we have had to do, it isn't necessarily the easiest situation, but it is what works for us.
