 I like a short shank chain mouth gag if you are slow working & don't worry too much about stopping (bc this bit has zero whoa). It's super flexy & comfy in the mouth. (Work one side or the other. Don't pull back on both reins at once. ) look up Ed Wright chain bit.

A soft responsive rib cage is the solution to a stiff horse, and I agree with a chain mouth piece to help prevent bracing.  My young mare has been a huge challenge and a long row to hoe, with stiff sides/hollow sides, and after buying numerous type bits, a great deal of stressing on my part, trying to figure out what to do, and what not to do, lol,  it has just helped greatly to focus on rib cage control and forward motion.

I agree with a chain bit but what type of bit are your riding in your horse at the moment? If you go to a snaffle mouthpiece to a chain it might be too much for the horse at first.
