Location: BOSSIER CITY, LA | I am in the process of halter breaking 3 brahma calves and need advice. Do you do it just like horse? I put halters with a rope on them in a litle pen. They would already come to you for scratching but wanting to teach them to lead and tie up. They are not liking the situation. |

Location: Prosser, WA | One way is to tie them up and they only get water when they let you lead them to it. They figure that out pretty quick. Another way is to let them drag a lead rope for a few days. We use halters that tighten up when pulled on. |

| We did it a lot like halter breaking colts. We liked that result much better than just tying them up. The results were that when they got spooked when first showing them, they didn't try to get away. Instead they looked to the kids to save them , lol. We raise Santa Gertrudis, so they have a lot of brahma. Brahma based breeds are very sensitive. I sure miss it. |

Location: BOSSIER CITY, LA | I realize now a donkey would be better but not available. We aren't going to show them I just wanted to get a few of the bull calves halter broke to help with the selling. Always had cows but none that I wanted to lead around, so this is all new to me.
I am putting up a tie post today so will try the water issue with them.
I just thought horses were an expensive hobby, since I have been doing these brahmas have learned they are too. |

Location: south central usa | how big are they? just curious...
one of our ag teachers in college thought it would be a good idea to halter break some calves, simply by us "handling them"...only bad thing is the smallest calf weighed over 500 lbs.. that all came to an end after about 4-5 sessions of us getting thrown all over the pen. it's a wonder nobody got seriously hurt |

| Keep their heads tied up every day for a couple hours and then touch them all over with a show stick, etc until they get more used to you. It can be hard/dangerous to break them depending on the cow. Some people frown against using the tractor but it works!! |

Location: N Texas | What kind of halter are you using? You need to get you some cheap rope halters like this at TSC or your local feed store. They tighten when you pull the rope, and loosen when they give to pressure. So yes, it's similar to halter breaking horses in that you release the pressure when they move forward.
Spending time tied up helps a lot too.
ETA: tie them to something sturdy and don't worry about them "setting back" like a horse would. They'll pull against it, but they don't flail around and act stupid like a horse will.
I've also seen people pull them with a truck, 4 wheeler, tractor, etc. Basically anything strong enough to pull them, lol.

I agree with this. Gentle bulls are more dangerous than wild ones because they have no fear of people. |

I agree with this. Gentle bulls are more dangerous than wild ones because they have no fear of people.
I agree. If we aren't going to show the bull, we just get them cube broke. |
