I have a horse that isn't drinking enough to satisfy me. Yesterday and today it was in the high 90s with the heat indexes around 106. He didn't touch his water in his stall yesterday or today. I always dump them and rinse them out every morning so they were fresh both days. I'm going to change buckets tomorrow and see if maybe it's just that bucket but it's the same one he's always had. If this keeps up I'm going to put him on electrolytes because if the heat. What's a good one that I can get at like Tractor Supply or somewhere similar because we don't have a lot of options around here? I want a feed though kind not a paste unless a paste is better.

If you can get " persevere" by Adeptus products that is my all time favorite. My horses will eat it directly from my hands. You can also use a spoon full of regular table salt in the feed and that works to! That's what my vet recommended. I always use adeptus when the weather is changing and to keep them drinking.

Do you add salt to his feed? If not, give that a try. Also, I've read where people try adding things like a small amount of Gatorade to the water.....not sure how much.

Just add some table salt to his feed. They don't really "need" electrolytes unless they are working very hard and sweating them all out daily. If you do add electrolytes, make sure you get the kind without any added sugars.

Table salt has all the good stuff taken out of it.

My first choice is the THE Electrolyte salt. It rocks...Second choice would be the Redmond salt. Both come with their own measure cups.

Years ago when I used table salt, I gave 1 tablespoon.

When I was hauling, I use to have a bucket of Electrolyte water and then a water bucket hung up with plain water.

Sea salt is a way better option over table salt.

My vet always told me to get powdered gatorade and just throw it in with their feed.

I've never understood giving Gatorade to horses. Everything I have ever read on it pretty much said it doesn't help at all.

“When it comes to electrolytes, too many people still think they can give their horses Gatorade,” Sylvester said. “It’s not a good alternative. A horse’s sweat has a different composition than human sweat. You need an equine-specific electrolyte. The form (powdered vs. paste) isn’t as much of an issue as long as its composition is right.

Id get some alfalfa cubes and put  another bucket in there and add a few cubes or apple cubes in the water..  EXTRA Bucket .. they usually will get in there to get them and slurp up water.. also id add soaked watery beet pulp or cubes to feed.. make it really watery.. until he decides to drink more..

I already do the alfalfa cubes. He gets 3 handfuls of cubes in 3/4th bucket of water and usually when he's done most of the alfalfa will be gone and still a half of a bucket of water. I watching him Monday get a bite and take his head out of the bucket and spit some water out. Maybe it was just coincidence though and not really anything to it.

Also adding.... I've heard about adding gatoraid and I've done it but I didn't do it for electrolyte. I just did it to flavor the water for a picky horse at a show. That's what I thought it was for.

Mine get Purina 12:12 loose mineral in their feed every morning. If they haven't both nearly emptied their 2 buckets each by the time I get home from work everyday it's odd. I have noticed a difference in water consumption when I forget the mineral. I prefer the balanced mineral approach daily over something specifically labeled electrolyte. I do try and keep a tube of oxygen jailbreak on hand when I travel, Ive had good luck with it settling stomachs and getting them drinking foreign water.

In a pinch unless you've got a good selection available locally I would go with table or sea salt to encourage drinking immediately.
