It's been a long while since I've been treed saddle shopping. We're headed to Youth World Sunday to go shopping but I'd like to know where to start.

So, BHW, which saddles generally fit a mostly flat backed horse? He's got a reasonable wither, some hefty shoulders, but his back is relatively flat and strong through the loin. I'm having trouble keeping his loin from getting sore.

I LOVE my Performance Saddle Company saddle. They are handmade and she has a flat tree. Beautiful saddles, I doubt I will ever buy anything else and I have been through all of the name brand saddles. http://pscsaddles.com/

Go talk to Felicia Carlton-Peloquin at Horse Tack World. She'll have a booth set up at Youth World and will be doing saddle fittings. She's great to work with. I recently purchased a new Team Camarillo Reinsman from her, but she carries many name brands. See if she can help...tell her Maggie sent you!

I'm a Double J fan. My horse's back is similar to yours, just a tish longer, and the regular treed JJ Pro fits him like a glove.

My mare is built similar to this....has a decent wither but is pretty flat and round though the back. She also is slightly narrower at the shoulders than through the loin. My standard pozzi would roll pretty bad. So last fall I ordered a wide tree and it fits her much better. I still have to get off and adjust my cinch, but I no longer feel like my saddle is constantly rolling off center. I also have a double j pro, which I ride my colt in. It fits her okay, but not as good as the pozzi wide.

I have two flat backed horses. If you go with a Todd Slone, it has to be a B3 FLAT. Not just a B3, they are not flat. Teskeys fit mine fairly good and they have fairly flat bars, and I have a coats that I bought that fits them all. I ended up also buying a Jackie Jatzlau treeless to race in, but that's because he turns hard and I like them. lol.

The biggest thing I found when fitting is look from the front. If there is a bulge under the pommel. It wont fit. I tried the double J's and Martins and none of them fit. The twist in all their trees were wrong for my guys.

Dbl J has a flat bar in their x wide tree.....  I was riding in it until I got my Caldwell. For me... Caldwell would be my pick.

Have you tried a Lynn McKenzie? I have a very broad, flat backed gelding and it just fits him so perfect. Not to mention they are very comfortable to ride in.
Wanted to add: I have a LM and will be at world on Sunday if you would like to try it. I think a vendor would let you fit the horse, but maybe not take a spin in it. Not sure. I havent bought a new saddle in forever lol.

I think I heard Caldell will be there. We have a very flat backed mare with huge shoulders and very thick through the loin and after about every saddle under the sun and much frustration a Caldwell Pro Max fits her like a glove!!

Thanks y'all! I have made myself a list and I'm on a mission.

Runninbay- I may take you up on that. I sat in one a hundred years ago but that horse is a totally different style than this one.

ThreeCorners- that's top of my list. I still remember vividly sitting in one at Open World back in 2005 or so.

I just sold my Lazy L because it was too narrow for my flat backed horse.  I'm soooo sad.  I miss it a ton.  What tree do your Lazy L's have in them?  I absolutely loved it.  I'm in a treeless right now, but not happy and want a treed saddle back.  That's why I found this post, searching for treed saddles that will fit her.

What saddle did you end up getting to fit this horse?  He looks just about like my mare that I'm currently trying to fit.  I had a Lazy L and it was too narrow for her.  Sorry to bump this up from several months ago, but was searching on the forum for some answers about saddles to fit her.  Thanks.

Thank you for sharing.  There are so many options.  I know that some people look only at gullet size when in reality it's tree width/angle that's important too.  I'll check out the one you posted. Thanks!

The best one I ever found was Meleta Brown's #2 tree. I wish I could find another one that fit like that. Nothing has fit him as well since then.

Oh! Just saw this.

I actually ended up buying a Just B Natural at Youth World. Leather quality is not the greatest but it really works at keeping me on this horse. He's only getting stronger and more catty the older he gets.

Still some issues with loin soreness but not nearly the problems we had before. I very seriously considered a Caldwell (and may end up there eventually) but I wanted to wait until he was mostly done growing and filling out before I dropped that much money on a saddle.
