So my sister's new barrel horse has awful feet. She bought her with a pretty bad crack in one front foot that our farrier is in the process of fixing and getting grown out. It's healing up nicely and she stays sound with shoes on. But trying to keep shoes on her is the problem. Poor hoof care and shoe jobs in the past has made them very soft, brittle and they flare pretty bad so it's hard to keep a shoe on her. She's always losing one and tearing them up so there's hardly any foot left to get a nail into. She can't go without because her feet are so tender.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good hoof supplements we could try to see if we can't get her feet to harden up and grow a little better so we can at least keep a shoe on her?

Call Heather from Simply Equine. She has a hoof supplement that works wonders. I've used it on my horse who had a bad farrier job and poor circulation in his feet. He went from being a very hard horse to shoe to one of the best in once shoe cycle.

THE hoof growth is a complete supplement. I've used it for dry brittle feet. Does have a money back guarantee. The company really stands by their products.

I have seen results with many horses on Perfect Horse "E3Live" Blue Green Agae.  It is a good supplement and see all around results of getting good nutrition.

There is nothing better than Equine Relevare Hoof Dressing. The problem is finding it.

My mare had terrible feet and threw shoes like nobody's business, so I did some research comparing different supplements and found Glanzen 3. I had never heard of it before but it has the most Biotin, B Vitamins, and Omega 3, and was more reasonably priced compared to other supplements. I freaking love it, her feet are SO much better and her coat looks amazing.

Is that the really stinky stuff that you only apply to the bottom of the hoof? If so, I have it in my tack room. I've used it in the past with really great results.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I'll be looking into all of these. A couple I've found on my own are SmartHoof Ultra by SmartPak and Farrier's Formula Double Strength. Does anyone know anything about these? The reviews for both are really good.

I'll be honest I did zero research, but I had a nurse friend tell me that the Dumor Hoof supp at tractor supply has higher amounts of the "good stuff" (told you I did zero research) that's in Farriers Formula etc and its CHEAP! I bought a big tub of it and have been feeding the loading dose, I believe you are supposed to feed it for 6 months then bump it down to half that. my farrier actually commented on how nice his hooves were growing out. We had to start scheduling him to getting shod every 5 weeks instead of 6.

Does anyone know if having the hoof additive mixed into Muscle Mass the same thing as their actual Hoof Supplement?  I need mine on something for his feet and he is already on Muscle Mass.

TLC Animal Nutrition  Mega Hoof. I pulled my horses shoes for the winter probaby the end of November.  We did not get snow and the hards sandy ground was not kind to his front feet, had curling edges and parts missing.. Farrier came on New Years Day to put shoes on and had to be really careful with the right front. I started Mega Hoof on January 5th, his next shoeing was Feb 29th and his feet were much better and on April 13th they were back to normal.  oh it is pellets.  I did 1 scoop am &  pm for a few months then did 1 scoop am only and I still do that even though I don't really have to.

It's a pretty strong smell that's hard to wash off your hands. But you do use on the whole hoof. Just not on the hairline. It was made by the same people that made the Miracle Leg paint. That was awesome stuff too.

They say the hoof dressing is still available but I've been looking for over a year for some. I did find an imitation that supposed to be the real thing. It's not.

You can get Relevare hoof dressing at Producer's Coop. Assoc. in Bryan, TX  The phone number is 979-778-6000.  There is usually only 3-4 cans on the shelf but I bet you can get them to ship it to you.  It's made locally in College Station.  I think I pay about 26.00 for it.

I really like Prime Performance Nutrition's BioGold Plus. It's biotin and MSM. My gray horse is notorious for having bad feet and the farrier commented in March that his feet were a lot harder and the soles were a lot thicker than normal. The only thing I had changed was this supplement. I'm now feeding it to my two sorrel horses who both have feet that tend to chip. I figured since I bought the 25 pound bucket, I could feed it to more than one horse so I use it in less than two years LOL.

Yes they do. But just try to order it from them. They are the ones that sent me the imitation last year claiming it's the same thing. It's not the same thing.

But it's as close as I've found so I tried to order again. It seems to be an impossibility to order from them if you don't use PayPal and I don't.

Thanks for that. I called them. They have none in stock and none on order and don't know if they can get it. But they are going to try and said they will call me if they can find some.

California Trace is one of the best hoof supplements.

I have taken several equine nutrition classes and this formula has what most equines are deficient in…..

http://www.californiatrace.com

I have been a human Nutritionist for over 20 years :)
and have been doing equine nutrition for about 8 years :)

Hope this helps.
