My poor horses are getting eaten alive by gnats under their bellies. I wash under neath almost daily with a medicated shampoo because the gnats have created open sores.. I dry them then apply corona or swat and then I spray a barrier spray to keep it from getting infected. But nothing seems to be working on keeping them off! I spray every morning with tri tech but it only lasts a few hours at that..I've never seen the gnats this thick before. Going to tsc to get more fly spray this afternoon and if there's something else out there that'd work I'd love to know! Tia

Pyhrana (sp?), yellow bottle with black lettering works really well. It is a bit greasy.  Works well, but some horses can be a bit sensitive to it.  It is a little pricey, but not much is needed.

I have had several horses with this problem . Only my problem was fly's and they made it so raw sometimes they would have a little blood, I found that Swat worked really great for keeping the fly under control. I would recheck often but usually it will last for a couple of days before I had to reply, I"m sure where you live could make a difference. I am in Texas so it gets really hot and often humid on top of the heat. But you might try it. Worked for me  I found the Swat would last longer than most any fly spray

I wish! I can't even keep fly masks on them..they are out on pasture 24/7 together and my gelding enjoys ripping everyone else's masks off and blankets. He's ruined every blanket and mask I have.

I've tried the swat and it just doesn't seem to work. Course my jar is probably old I may try a new jar. I live in Texas and yes its so hot and humid here. I'll give the pyranha a try as well, I've used it in the past. I just liked using the tri tech for the sunscreen in it but it's just not working on these gnats!

Young Living's Animal Scents wound ointment is what worked for my horses. It healed the sores and some of the oils repel insects so it helped that way, too. I live about 30 miles off the Texas coast, so I hear ya about the heat, humidity and insects being miserable this time of year.

THIS STUFF!! It works for me. I use under the bellies and it seems to really help. I also have a donkey and the flies were absolutely tearing his legs up. I sprayed them with this (he looked like he had purple boots on :)) and problem solved! His little legs are healed! It's cheap enough and I really think it works!

Thank you all for the suggestions- my gelding is suffering from the little buggers (pardon the pun!) I think flies & gnats are partial to grey and palomino horses.

The only thing that works here in SO GA, and we are surrounded by swamp - is Ultra SHield.  Spray it on twice a day and then brush.  My husband's mare would get marble size knots from them, it has stopped them the last two years.

I coat on Vaseline along their underline and the sheaths. It seems to stay on for a few days and is cheaper than continuing with Swat. I put it on pretty thick and that helps it last.

Go with the Vasoline. Cover any area's they like to eat them. Under bellys, sheath and mine get hit hard on their chests. The little buggers can't eat throught he vasoline. You should be able to get away with just doing it once a day. If its not terribly hot you might get a couple days.

I have several suggestions. Durvet cream has lanolin and greases the area up so it is not so inviting to flies. Biozide will get crusty when it gets covered with dirt. The crust works well to keep flies off. WARPAINT is a roll-on insect repellent. Haven't used it on the belly but it worked well in ears.

I saw the war paint today, it's pretty spendy. It was $20 for a stick the size of a deodorant. I bought the endure roll on it says it's waterproof and sweat proof.. hopefully it'll help! Going to try some Vaseline as well and of course more fly spray.. I bought the bug guard spray, says it kills and repels gnats.

Have not seen the endure. Warpaint goes a long way. Vet told me not to put petroleum products on my horse so I use Corona or Durvet. Both are lanolin based

Interesting, when I figured out the swat wasn't cutting it, I slathered on corona... it didn't help much either. It's like the stuff just melts off. The gnats seem to peak early in the morning when I'm feeding, they are just swarming the horses. I'm gonna try putting this stuff on tonight when I feed and see if it helps!

Mosquito Halt is doing a better job than anything for me. I have a mostly white Paint whose belly can be a campground for baby flies and knats.

I used the endure roll on last night and it worked! No gnats on their bellies this morning. .. they were still swarming around the horses but not on their under belly..think I'm going to buy the endure fly spray too and see if it works just as well as the roll on.
