Location: somewhere in the south | Need you guys to give me some ideas what might be the problem with a mare I own!! We have ridden her in the past and she was an angel, then had a month or so off. When we started riding her again she got prancy, up in herself, switching rear leads constantly, and just over all aggravated! BUT only when asked to do more than a trot, but she isn't being ****y, you can see there's something wrong just by watching someone ride her, she lunges great (with and without a saddle), it's only with someone on her. We've had her checked by the vet for chiro, lameness, general soreness, switched saddles, bits, etc........we just can't figure what's wrong!!! I truly don't believe it's a mare attitude, I think it's pain but can't figure out where and why it's only when ridden!! Help.......................... |

That's on our list but I believe it's pricey to do................do you have any idea of the cost? |

Location: Oklahoma | It has been several years since I had mare ultrasound it is not that high Mine had to have surgery Im thinking it was under 500.00 from a very well known vet Her ovary was the size of a grapefruit before they figured out that ovaries. but not all ovary problems have to have surgery. good luck. |

| Should be the cost of a regular ultrasound anywhere from 60-100.
If it shows anything, that is where it can get pricey |

Location: Montana | Where I'm at an ultrasound is like $35 or there abouts, so I think that would be a good idea to try next. I had a gelding (so obviously no ovaries, LOL) that just had a wild hair in him, but he bucked and it was only once in a while, not every time. According to other people I talked to who have owned similar bloodlines, when that particular bloodline gets out on green grass, they can become bucky (maybe PSSM in my case, didn't have him long enough to do a test), but my point is have you considered what you are feeding her as well or if anything has changed in that regard since you last rode her? |

It may be as simple as your mare is one of the horses that have to be kept ridden down ..... so do something simple like some 3-4 hour pasture/trail rides and see what happens after she tires out some .... use a roping saddle for these trips ... your barrel saddle could be whacking her in the kidneys ... and no up and down posting moves ... ride deep in the saddle like you are glued to your horse .. lol
People with old bloodlines in northern cow states knows what it means when cowboys say ... .... This horse can go all day and still be fresh coming home ... lol
If you are in one of the mexico USA border states she may have been a Mexican parade or ranch horse ... my Mexican vaquero friends never ride in a walk or trot ..... it is a high energy jiggyboo gait as if keeping time with a Mexican dance song ...
Do a couple of simple vettings .... check her jaw teeth for spurs and for broken wolf teeth, scope her ovaries, flush her with saline and a simple wide range antibiotic for good measure .. no cultures and do a caslick and then do some long hours riding her each day for a week... in a roping saddle .... there is a lot of difference in the terms .... wet blankets VS riding time ...
