I'm trying to get a rough estimate on the cost of arthroscopic surgery of a chip from the coffin bone/extensor process or internal fixation if he's a candidate for that. Anyone have any idea? Just trying to weigh options for the ranch horse! thanks in advance. I'm in CA if that helps

I would be estimating several thousand (4-6k) without complications. I don't have any good quotes other than that.

Chip from knee removed in 2007 = $2300
Chips from stifle removed this year = $3500 (not my horse).

Both at the equine hospital by Los Alamitos.

I had 2 bone chips removed from my gelding's front fetlock last year. I am in TN and it was close to 4,500 all in with xrays, injections (recommended after the surgery, and regenerative therapy, also recommended after the surgery) and my horse is still not sound. I was told that he was a fantastic candidate for the removal, but once they got in there they realized that they had basically damaged all the cartilage around the chips. It's been 11 months and he is comfortable to trail ride but my vet has recommended that he not be barrel raced anymore. I currently give him adequan every month and he's out on pasture where he runs, bucks, and plays comfortably. I ride him about once every couple of weeks and he does fine and doesn't seem any better or worse after light riding. I will also add that he's an 11 year old OTTB that was a pretty nice half second/ full second off horse when he was running. Sad, but I did everything I could to get him back in the barrel pen because he LOVED his job. Good luck!!

Had a bone chip removed via arthroscopic from a knee in 2008 ran about $1200 if I remember correctly. I don't know how much it varies depending on the area the chip is being removed from. I am located in Southern Indiana so we just go over to Lexington, KY to have everything done. I understand where you are coming from.. that was our big dilemma but I couldn't buy another horse like him for $1200 so we took the chance. Hope you can find someone decently priced!
