| I've been fortunate to have the same farrier for my horses for the past 9 yrs now. He puts me on a schedule for the year and mails out reminder cards, does decent work. I always give him extra around the holidays, and every once in a while if I have a particularly fractious horse that's being difficult. But other than that.. I don't tip him for regular visits. Maybe I should ? Anyone else tip ? |

Location: North Dakota | I tip mine with Pendleton; does that count? ETA: I don't cash tip every single trip, but if he resets mine on short notice I will.
He gets Pendleton a couple times of year, usually around Christmas, and then again to kick off summer.

He's a really neat guy and still runs a mile or so every morning. I believe he is 71 or 72 this year. I tip him $10 every trip. |

| I don't tip mine, he gives me one day notice he's coming and that leaves me scrambling sometimes to find someone to cover for me at work. Of course, I work for family, and we cover for each other, but sometimes they have stuff too. He comes from a over a 100 miles away so if I can't get to him I am screwed. |

Location: WI | I tip mine usually about $10-$15 a trip. He comes and does my entire herd, drives about 2 hours, and I will also offer him food/drinks if wants. A good honest farrier is hard to find so I will spoil mine as much as possible! I've been fortunate that past few years now - before that, it was tough to find a decent one. |

Same - every. single. time.
To be fair, he also has a closed client list, is semi-retired, and only does horses he likes now .... the man and his work are worth it to me. |

| I will tip in special circumstances, like when I need a horse squeezed in or need an extra trip made. One horse kicked him pretty bad (he knew ahead of time the horse kicked but declined doping him up...the horse gets happy meds now when getting his feet done) and I tipped him after that.. |

He sets his own prices, and there is already a trip fee added. But if he comes by close to say Thanksgiving or Christmas I will give him something extra. I used to offer him a cold drink, but he always declines, so I stopped doing that.

| I believe tipping is deserved when someone goes above and beyond their job description to provide a service. Goes with anyone providing a service from farrier to waitress. I only tip when this happens. It's my farriers job to come to my house at a designated time, replace my horses shoes with quality craftsmanship. If this Happens, they get no tip. If they have to replace a lost shoe, make accommodations on time of day for my sake, etc. they make for me I tip. |

Or being fed a big breakfast between horses on a Saturday morning, my fiance is a crazy good cook. I did give him a tip the two times he came up to the vet's to shoe my gelding, extra miles and extra time spent going over x-rays and lameness exams with him. I've also tried to help him out in his obviously bad taste in women department but it falls on deaf ears. I think it is from all that time spent with his ( l ) about his head as Ed Wright used to say.

| Mine gets a tip of $100 every trip. He has shod for me for years, does a fantastic job, and is always prepared to handle any corrective problem I throw at him. He drives almost 2 hours to me and doesn't charge a trip fee. His rates are very reasonable I can only think of 3 shoes I've lost in the last 9 years and he will make every effort to get to me or meet me somewhere to put it back on. AND he brings me a large Diet Coke every time because he knows I'm addicted. You better believe I tip. |

I make sure horses are tied. Feet are picked. They're fly sprayed so they don't fuss. And I braid and wrap tails up out of the way. I offer bottled water. Help with the horse if I can. But he makes enough on my two horses. |

Location: North Dakota | I tip $10-$15 everytime for my two horses. I am so lucky I got the chance to get on his short list of clients he still does. He is in his upper 60s and has shorten his client list a lot the last several years. He travels from 2 1/2 hours away. I always offer drinks/food as he spends close to a whole day at the barn I manage trimming and shoeing all the horses. I have a blast on "farrier" day because he is fun to talk to and so full of knowledge. I don't what I will do if I ever have to find another farrier as we have some really crappy ones around here that have messed up a lot of feet. |

| My husband is a farrier and I can tell you that the people who tip (even just a few dollars) are put at the top of his priority list when they need him. He will fit them in or make a special trip out ASAP for those few that do simply because he feels appreciated by them.

Location: South Central Florida | With that said. . . . I had 1 farrier for 24.5 years. I tipped always. He started training his son (he also went to farrier school) I was fine with him doing my pasture horse trims. But the Rodeo horse/horses I wanted my original farrier. He was out of town for a while, and gradually started sending his son for my good horses (a few years into his training), who never really had the talent or love for the trade. I started losing shoes literally monthly, then weekly. The son blamed us (I believed him for a while but had no idea what we were doing). I was never mad, and never ugly, then one day after 24, yes TWENTY FOUR years, he stopped returning my calls. His son said my horse was losing too many shoes.
Did a lot of research and actually interviewed 5 farriers before I picked the one I have now. It's been 3 years-ish :)
But I still tip. This farrier is ALWAYS there as fast as possible if we have a problem, excellent feet. My vet comments on how balanced she is (and she doesn't have great feet). |

That's too funny!!!!
I'm ashamed to say I've never thought about tipping him, but now I will. He puts us on the schedule for the next visit before he leaves the barn, takes good care of my mare that has some issues as well as Dan (37) and his old arthritic legs, and has even come by to check out one of the horses when I couldn't get my vet. Y'all have opened my eyes to something I should have been doing.

This is what makes sense to me! I dont tip my farrier because he prices his own work and isnt working under another business. There is certainly nothing wrong with tipping, but i feel like if i did it once i would have to do it every time, which would really add up! |

Why is it disheartening? I honestly don't understand tipping anyone besides a waitress/waiter/bartender.
I do tip my hair lady because I am in a small town and I know it would be hard to get an appointment at that salon if I didn't, but I don't feel like I should have to. My opinion is that she (or anyone one else I'm paying to do a service) can set their own charges to what they need to pay their overhead and earn a living.
The hairdresser having to pay rent to the salon owner is no different than the mechanic paying the mortage on his shop, the plumber paying for his van & tools, the veterinarian paying for their office overhead and student loan payments, etc. Yet you don't tip all of these people. Where would you draw the line if you started tipping everyone who had business overhead to pay? When I had my own chiropractic office my patients didn't tip me. And I didn't expect them to.
As someone else said, why are we tipping people to do their job?
But considering my farrier just fired me, maybe I need to start tipping the new one. Though it is upsetting to think even though I pay promptly at each appointment, have horses caught and waiting for him, have safe horses to work on and keep a standing appointment every six weeks – that I wouldn't be considered a valued client because I didn't tip. |

But if you're working for someone, (hair salon, delivery driver, nail salon, waitress, masseuse...) then I will tip if you do a good job. Providing my shoer with optimal shoeing conditions is enough in my mind. I know he charges more for problem horses so I leave it up to him to tell me what he wants to charge. |

IMO I view a tip as a sign of appreciation.
You provide a service. I will pay you for the service.
But did you do it in a way that went above and beyond my expectations?
If yes, here is a tip to show my appreciation.
I really don't care what your job is. If I feel like you went the extra mile I will tip.
Obviously there is a time and a place to do it. But if it is at all appropriate... I say why the heck not? |

I agree with this. I have a great farrier, but he is quirky and I do cater to him quite a bit.
I do understand that if he goes out, catches the horse, and does it all on his own, I would probably tip. |

Yes he is good and will always show up by the time I really need him but the check is always there and half the time he fills it out. I couldn't really tell ya what he charges for sure ( I ain't good with keeping track of my money... whole 'nother story lol ) I just have a really hard time tipping someone when they are setting the price for their work. If they think they are worth more then they need to raise their prices and if I can afford it then I will pay, if not I will find someone else. But I will most likely find a way to pay as he's really the only one close that I think does a good job besides the jerk (lol ) that up and retired on me hehe
This.^^^^ He is not cheap and gives me sometimes less than 24 hour notice he is coming. I am always on time and hold my horses and make sure he never has to do a bad behaving horse. He is good with the horses and a really good farrier. I feel it balances out. However, if he has a helper with him that does some of the work on my horses, I will tip the helper.
I agree with this. I have a great farrier, but he is quirky and I do cater to him quite a bit.
I do understand that if he goes out, catches the horse, and does it all on his own, I would probably tip.
My farrier is beyond quirky. I put up with him because he does a great job. I have promised him if he ever shows up on time for an appointment I I'll give him an extra $100 for the day. Haven't had to pay up yet. |

| Does anyone's farrier show up on time anymore?. Mine was 2 hours late the other day and ended up only having enough time to do 1 of my 3. This wasn't a last minute appointment request either .. |

Location: sunny california | Look up how tipping started. some people feel tipping is an insult as it is for "servants" not professionals. I remember when 10% was standard tip, now you are cheap to tip 20%. Out of control if you ask me. People should be paid a decent wage. Sometimes I have to stop and think..Am I supposed to tip for this? geeze. |
