I want to take good care of my mares legs. They are extremely long and she's a big girl. She has thin hide. Currently we are trotting out a half hour to an hour daily, and I am cold hosing her legs when we return. How long should I be running the hose on her? Anyone else have advice on leg care for after workouts?
Liniments or poultices are always another positive thing you could apply to your routine. If your mare is sensitive with her thin hind I'd look to get a very mild liniment then, my mare once blistered from a strong liniment. I like the Ice Tight poultice and have also heard good things about the Sore No More cooling clay. Back on Track products are also a favorite of mine to wrap their legs with after a workout or when traveling if it's not too terribly hot out.
Ice Boots, the very simple ones with elastic. The 9 pocket for large horses on the back legs if your horse is under 15 hands you can get away with the 6 pocket. I have had every type of ice machine made. I always get great results with these simple boots. I always have an ice chest along. I have had my Professional Choice Boots for 12 years and love them for the hard work they've done. I tell parents of kids that I mentor if they have a lazy kid then buy the ones with the gel packs that can be frozen or the ones with the little gell beads that you freeze. They don't get the leg as cold but if the kid uses them they are better than nothing.
