Location: home for the winter...what a dumb idea | So I love my current job. I work Monday - Friday at a medium-sized boarding barn. We have mostly fancy hunter jumpers. I clean stall, feed, look after our 15+ horses. I enjoy my work most of the time. My problem is I have no benefits, no retirement, no insurance ect. I do make a good wage $18 an hour. How ever I can't afford to live near the barn because it's a tourist skie town. So I drive 500+miles a week back an forth to work. The barn owner had talked to me 4 month ago about taking over then barn and managing it, but I have now come to the realization that she will never be able to let anyone else run the place. She doesn't trust her employees and plays serious favorits. We lost one of our best employees this last month because she tried to talk to the owner about some problems she was having with a long time employee. ....he is lazy always has been and never takes responsibility for his mistakes. But he always shows up to work and has been there for 5 year. Anyways I am in debate as to wether I should start looking else ware for work. I really need to be closer to my job and have benefits for my son. I am his sole parent since his dad desided he was a "real cowboy" and didn't want the commitment of a family to tie him down and left a year ago. |

| I just recently switched jobs where I was making good money, had benefits (401k, insurance, paid vacation, etc) but like you, I was driving far to get there everyday. After a while it became too much and I decided to leave for a job that has less pay, no benefits, but a much shorter commute and it also gave me more time to do things I was missing out on. I don't have kids (the human kind) to account for but I can honestly say that leaving my old job was the best thing I did. I was never happy, super stressed out and had no life. I guess the point im trying to make is... Do what is smart but also what makes your quality of life better.
Good luck! |

| I would start looking for something closer to home with benefits. Kids get sick, medical bills are expensive. You would save a lot just in gas and wear and tear on your automobile so a smaller salary would be ok. Wish you luck |

Location: home for the winter...what a dumb idea | Thank you ladys for the advice.... I got an email this am from a barn in KY that is looking for a live in care taker/manager. I will be calling them today....the drive is awful in the winter. It can take more then 1.5 hours to get there and then I have to take my son to his daycare and drive back to work. |

Location: Kansas | I agree on looking for another job. Your best bet would be an office job. I definitely know that I won't take a job without benefits or retirement. |

Location: KS | Yep, I also agree with some of the above post. Look for something closer with benefits. 18.00 is good pay, but if you get a job with full benefits that can add up to another 500-600 dollars a month which would make up for a little bit of a pay cut? jmo. I was blessed with a job offer right out of college (Im an animal science major, this was a job at a farm implement dealership), best decision I ever made. 5 mile commute with full benefits for husband, me, and soon to be little one. Work with great people also. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I would rather work for less and stay happy than work for more and be miserable. You sound like you have a lot of experience. Find something you enjoy doing that has full benefits and go for it.
