Why is the color purple significant in the Bible? Back in the biblical times , the color purple signified elegance and wealth. It is noted as the color of the tabernacle furnishings in Israelites temples, and the priests were required to have purple in their clothing.
The color purple is mentioned often throughout the Bible. Proverbs tells us that a good wife is worthy of being clothed in purple, and in the New Testament story if the rich man and Lasarus, the rich man is described as " clothed in purple and fine linen ". Luke 16:19.
In addition, Jesus is clad in a purple robe during his trial when the Romans attempted to mock his kingship, and in Acts, Lydia , as respected Christian woman, is described as being a " dealer in purple cloth. Acts 16:14
Purple was associated with wealth in ancient times because it was a very difficult dye to acquire. The colorful compound came from just one source , ther murex, a mollusk native to eastern Mediterranean. Each murex contained a very small amount of dye, which had to be laboriously removed by hand. Thus it took a lot of murex to produce enough dye to color a garment. As a result, only the rich could afford it.
