Location: Korea... for 8 more months | Do any of you run a mutt horse? I don't mean a horse who has a great pedigree that just sold as grade for this or that reason but a real mutt. I have one whose dam was APHA and sire was ???.
I'm just wondering how many of us mutt runners are out there. Feel free to share pictures :)

Location: NeverLand | My sister had a friesian crossed with a welsh pony. We called her the black dragon. Had all the friesian features she was black had the long mane beautiful tail and feathers. And boy did she have a motor. She did dressage, jumping, and my sister also ran barrels on her in high school rodeo. I have no doubt in my mind she would of been a 1D horse. She was kinda a freak of nature. She was so cool! And was probably 14.3 to 15.0 hands. Unfortunately she coliced, she had surgery and recovered. Then coliced again and we were willing to do surgery again but the vet said chances were slim that she would
Most likely not make it out of the procedure. |

Location: Korea... for 8 more months | I would love to see pictures of your mutts, especially the Friesian! I agree that mutts are some of the best but I'm anxious to see how mine holds up against the running bred horses (she's not even patterned yet). Someday I would love to be able to afford nice running bred horse but until then I'm happy with my mutts. |

| I guess my horse is a mutt lol. She is registered but she's half Arabian and half quarter I can register each half seperatly if I wanted. She was bred to be a Reiner and I am not a Reiner but I can see she would have made one heck of a Reiner! She's 14.2 and not very wide but I have won more and set more PR with her than any other horse so far! |

I have both and I was so excited to get my fancy running bred and don't get me wrong I love her but the thing I realize is that the horse doesn't have a clue how he's bred and he doesn't care either lol. A nice horse is a nice horse regardless of anything else and a not so nice horse is.... Well a POC weather or not he's bred well! I have let myself feel really intimated on my tiny half Arab at big races surrounded by massive race Breds, but she has always exceeded my expectations and shown she can hold her own! My race bred is also not what I expected so far I am just starting her on the concept of turning things and she is soo turney! She will turn everything in sight with no direction if I would let her! She's also kind of lazy lol. I am fine with that because my other horse is really ratey and I was worried about running opposite styles since my other horse works so well for me but I think she's going to be similar in many ways. |

Location: Texas | When i was younger i had a 12.3H quarter welsh cross gelding. He was an awesome little horse. He was as long bodied as a regular horse, just short legs. Like a corgi. LOL. He ran 21-22 second poles and was a local 2D horse with some 1D runs as well. And honestly, he was surely talented enough to have been faster in both events, but he didnt have the best foundation and had a few tendencies and stubborn streaks. Had I gotten him when he was younger, and I older, he would have been phenomenal. I wish I had him now that pony races are a thing. He would have been awesome. |

| I run a Mustang I adopted from the BLM 14 years ago, he's my little 4D rockstar in our club ( usually around 50 runners). Consistent every run, tries his heart out. Won a couple buckles & cash on him over the years, people can't believe he's a Mustang .. love him to pieces :)

Really cool! They're doing so much now with the expos and makeovers to help more of them find homes. I think that's great. |

Everything you said here is so encouraging! Thank you! I know I'll get intimidated as well since my mare is tiny too, maybe 14.1 and super narrow but she's a little spitfire and loves to go so I think she'll end up really enjoying it. Not to mention she's built perfectly for poles. |

Thats so cool you run a mustang. My other mutt (not barrel horse) gets called a mustang a lot but there's just no way since he came from an old run down ranch in Alaska lol. No idea what he is but definitely not mustang. He's all heart though like yours and I've had him for 12 years.
FearTheBigGrayHorse- I'm going to try to figure out how to do pictures on here. This is my first time joining a forum lol just did it for the sake of this post. |

This cracked me up! lol I call a lot of horses mutt horses, I thought I was the only one. I owned a few when I was a kid and loved them. But that was before I started barrel racing. But the majority of the horses I rode were just grade quarter horses. We called them plow ponies lol |

Location: Florida | I run a 13.3 Quarter horse Arab mutt .. more Arab look to her.. pretty face but not the best built body hahaha...narrow with a tiny hindquarter. She keeps up with the big horses though and has never hit a barrel in 3 yrs with me. Won me lots of money, awards, and qualified for World. Wouldn't trade her for all the tea in China.

| I have a 27 year old mutt horse. I have always called him a "grade quarter horse" but I honestly have NO IDEA about what kind of horse he is. When I bought him the only info I had was that he came from Kentucky. He's super lanky and about 15 hands. I have had him since he was 7, I was a green rider and he was green broke. We barrel raced together from the time he was 8ish until he was about 24. He was never the fastest one in the pen but he gave his all and was a super consistent 3-4D horse no matter where we went or what the ground was like. Has never limped or gimped a day in his life. He's still sound and ride able, I hop on him bareback from time to time and tool around the arena or the pasture. He's the best horse I have even owned. He helped raise me and was a fantastic teacher. I love my mutt horse! I'd give anything to know how he was bred just out of curiosity. I've heard anything from TB to saddlebred to pony to quarter horse, you name it, but I always just say "he's a Shiloh" :) |

Location: 31 lengths farms | My little HS rodeo mare was a mutt..technically a pony but we kept her shod so she hit 14 hands so I could legally ride her in 4-H, LOL!!! In our county you could no longer show ponies when you were over the age of 12. She was out of a quarter horse mare and by an Arab stallion. The owner of the mare had the mare boarded while he was out of town hunting, apparently the stud got out and there were several half Arab crosses from his romp that night.
Ginger was built like the QH and then had the little dished face of the Arab and a motor and a half but was totally sane. The guy I feed leased her from wanted to rope and felt she was too little for him to do that on so we traded horses, he took my Appy gelding and I took Ginger to run gymkhana events on in 4-H and to Jr. Rodeo off of. In HS I did a little break away and team roping on her too and the guys used her to steer wrestle off of. Basically she was only tied to the trailer during rough stock events. I started showing her in the Showmanship classes for 4-H too because the horse I used for Western Pleasure was a pig on the ground. She owned those classes!!!
When she got older and my western pleasure gelding had to be put down I started showing her WP also at smaller shows, she adapted pretty well. There was an older lady in the riding club that had been injured riding years before that was scared to ride but still loved horses. She would come to the shows and "borrow" Ginger to lead around the arena to get her horse fix, Ginger was the only horse she would even do that with, I think her small size wasn't as intimidating for Dixie.
That little mare ran tough and competitive up to 28 years old, a young girl I had in gymnastics decided to HS rodeo her senior year of HS after breaking her hand and it not setting correctly. She tried my younger mare and it was just not a good fit, especially with a hand in a cast. I was still running Ginger lightly and they hit it off beautifully, we rubber banded to the rein to Jackie's hand and changed her directions because of the cast, they ended up qualifying to state in barrels from their district but she chose not to go, we both worried about the haul and the stay on a horse that age. I quit running her all together a year or so later, just felt she had more than given back to me and after a run she was starting to come up sore the next day. I still hauled her with me, loaned her to kids for lead line classes. You didnt' dare leave the yard without her!!!
She is buried were my first barrel used to be set in our back pasture looking out towards the creek bed that we did 99% of our riding in along with a lot of silver and a saddle.
I'd take another mutt just like her any day. |

Yep! She's about as red dun as red dun could be!
Kind of looks like a mule some days, but that's okay LOL |
