Do all dogs howl?  I'm talking long, long, drawn out, head back sorrowful howls that put chills down your spine??  Our dog, Luke Skywalker whom we figure is just a Shep X just scared the holy heck out of all of us.  He's always been a "talker" and barks at you like your supposed to know what he's saying,  but he has never done this before.  It was loud, it was freaking spooky and it went on for a good five minutes.  Short bark, looooongg howl. Over and over.  It made me anxious, like we're going to get an earthquake or something. LOL.

German Shepherds and cross' tend to be talkers.
And they love to sing.  He may have heard canines off in a distance singing and was joining them.
I have 2 purebreds and they tend to get loud and I have to stop them.
I have actually had the neighbors dogs (that are a couple miles away through the woods) start up, then my closet neighbors dogs start up, and mine join in.  I go out and yell at mine to knock it off and they ALL shut up.  My voice carries through the woods and all the dogs hear it. LOL.

Not sure about shepherds but my beagle mix joins in the fire dept siren. We live about 2 blocks from the station and everytime it goes off he starts in.

Of all the unlikely candidates to hoooowwwwwwlllll... My boxer! HAHA. That face is not made for howling, but he does it now and again and it completely cracks us up.  It's usually when someone is driving down the drive way that he knows. Only for "good" reasons does he do it.

Our mastiffs howl. They howl at sirens. They howl with other dogs. They howl when the chickens get loud. And they howl with the coyotes. They harmonize. Lol. It sounds cool... As long as I'm not trying to sleep.

We have a german shepard wolf mix and he howls when he barks. He is a pretty cool dog to listen to.....we also have a more pure bred german shepard and like another poster stated, he does talk to you.

I caught him In the act this morning. He won't shut the flip up now. It's like he found his voice, and he's gonna sing until he drops.

It would have scared the crap out of me, too! You should see me when I see a rattlesnake. I don't scream or move fast until I get far away, but I am going into all kind of silent scream faces until I can get to a safe distance. I probably look like my face is having a seizure.

Oh it's beyond adorable. His little smushy face kind of puckered together to make a howl. Precious.

I have two GSDs and while they are very vocal, I've never heard them howl (a howl would be so much better than the awful noise the one makes when she's excited lol). But the 3 mini aussies will sit at the door and howl if you go outside without them. It literally sounds like coyotes are inside the house, its a chorus of howling and yipping. They're ridiculous.

Coyotes bark but they don't really howl for very long. Not around here anyway. Wolves howl longer around here.

I bet that's it---he realizes Halloween is right around the corner and he's practicing!! My Luc (Siberian Husky) is a talker and can howl like a pro, but he usually howls for a reason. My outside girls howl with the coyotes and the train whistle a town over, which then sets Luc off!

Record your Luke for your haunted house!

Every morning, my Pomeranian go outside and calls big Scooby to the fence. Scooby sets up to howling and Gunner throws his tiny little head back and barks. (He thinks he's howling.) This goes on for quite a bit.
