I'll be moving to the Phoenix, Arizona area for the winter months and was wondering if the rattlesnake vaccine is worth it? My mom is a vet and can get it decently priced but was wondering if it's effective. Any info appreciated!

I have a friend that does the vaccine plus she went and had her dog rattlesnaked trained. If we moved there we would be getting the shots done.

Very worth it. Have a snake catcher fetch you a snake and defange it, then go about training your dogs to stay away. We live in snake country and my stock dogs have a 1 track mind when working the goats I must get my new dog 'programmed' as she went right over the top of one yesterday with not a worry. I on the other hand was having a heart attack.

My husband's friends are mainly out in West Texas and any time we are hunting out there I tell the hunters you get snake bit get moving to civilization, we've got a good window of time to get the antivenom in you. Don't panic just move. We have the opposite directions for those here in SA area we till them to sit tight and we'll get EMS to them.

If you are here in the winter, you shouldn't have a problem.  That's when they hibernate.  I've lived in Arizona since 1987, knock on wood, have not had a problem, with the horses or dogs getting bitten.  With that said, I have friends who have not been that lucky.  Probably depends on where and for how long you will be here. Good luck with your decision.

No. In Texas I don't see rattlers or copperheads in the winter.... I  have had several dogs get rattle snake bit, all are fine, and once cat get bit by a venomous snake who was fine. Gave one dog the rattle snake vaccine years ago, he ended up with meningitis... and $7-10,000 of vet work to save him. He is still messed up, holds his head funny, one eye is not right.....

I think we'll be going ahead with it. Ordered some for the horses and the dog and we'll probably get her trained too. Thanks for the info everyone!
