Location: Texas! | Sent radiographs to Dr. Honnas and he recommended surgery in six places. Now just waiting on referring vet to fill out insurance paperwork and recommend to them the surgery and make our appointment. I will keep up updates as we go through his recovery.

Great that you used Dr Honnas. He's the best. I've had three horses in my care that have had the surgery with him, and they all went back to running barrel very successfully!! |

| Glad that the surgery went well and that he recovers quickly and fully.
So now I have some questions since I didn't see your original post and also because I have a horse with a definite back issue.
What exactly was wrong with your horse and how did they definitively diagnose it?
I looked in to getting a definite diagnosis by xrays. What I was told was that they could only xray the top of the spinus process. They can see some cases of kissing spine but not all, so cannot rule it out (although my vet told me KS usually is to the front of the horse and my colt's issue is at the thoracic/lumbar junction).
A body scan was recommended but then was told that it will basically only tell me "where" the issue is, not "what" the issue is.....ummmmm I already know "where". When the chiro/vet adjusts him he is good for a few days to a couple of weeks before he somehow puts himself out again. He short steps in the hind when he is out and either vapor locks and won't move when it gets bad or on the first occasion blew up and a seriously talented bronc rider was challenged to stay on him.
This is a colt I have raised out of a royally bred black type mare and he is 5 now and "was" green broke, but since I can't ride him he is a pasture pet. I would like to get a definitive diagnosis and either get him fixed or just content myself the he will be my pasture ornament for the rest of his life. He is gorgeous, smart well bred and athletic as all get out when his back is not out. So any advice you could give me from your experience with your horse would be appreciated.
And continued healing vibes for your horse. |

My horse was diagnosed last year with KS by xray. Either injections or surgery were advised. I've yet to do either. |

He's come back great I still had to be very careful with saddle fit and the best fit I've found is a vernon purdy that he feels the most free in. Larry Coats also fit great but I like the purdy fit best. He came back STRONG. I got left behind in the alley for the first three weeks we were back running. He hasn't had any soreness or back pain and I constantly check his spine and incision site for discomfort. |
