I bought a new finished mare couple months ago. Super hard worker ,1d and tough as nails. Only issue is she hates reins going on and off and bridle on and off over her ears. She was in fact abused as a colt. I knew that. She is 11 now. When your not bridling she is so kind and you can rub and play with her ears and she could care less. Even haltering she is just fine. She works so hard and wins so much for me I just use a snap for reins and would like to find a headstall you can it put on same way. Ideas?? That's her only hole and I am totally happy to live with it.

I would just use a headstall that has buckles and unbuckle to put it on or taking off.

I have a horse that doesn't like a bridle going over his ears so I unbuckle the one side and put it on that way. He has a problem with his atlas and when it's out is when I have a problem. It's a chronic problem so after he is worked on it only stays in for a few weeks.

I had a mare that had that fungus in her ears and she was a real pain to bridle. A one ear unbuckled worked the best...I even just took the ear piece off. Nrs carries head stalls that tie like a rope halter. I always thought that would work well.

I use a single ear or brow band head stall on her now depending on bit. I thought about one of those head stalls with no ear or brow. That way I could just in bucks and she is good. Probably try that route. I just hate watching that head stall slip back into their neck. Lol like the above poster said I can just unbuckle it I guess. For HER she gets what she wants. She is that nice.

Just modify a brow band headstall so the brow band and the cheek peice both snap and unsnap. A trip to the saddle shop should fix you up.

On our OTT TB mare I used a single ear headstall and opened it up like a halter.

I have punched a hole in the top of my headstall and run some baling twine through it and then tied it under their throatlatch area. It wasn't pretty but it was effective.

Buy her a mule headstall. They unclip at the crown so you don't have to pull those long ears through the bridle.

^^^This. I have one that I can't put the reins/halter/bridle over his ears. I always take the ear piece or browband off and ride with just the one piece.

I had a mare that hated her ears to be touched, so had a one ear headstall that I would unbuckle and just put it on her like I would a halter, worked great and it had a throat latch, the throat latch was contected to the head stall on each side it didnt run threw the ear peice, I will see if I can find a picture of one for you, it was a older headstall like the ropers used in the day.

Yea the split ear would be a no go. lol But I like the one with throat latch. I'm going to try and just use head stall alone with no ear or brow band.. If it rides ok then that will be it..

Back years ago that's what I would do with most of my headstalls took off browbands or ear peices and just used the head peice holding the bit, the headstalls back then were just plan janes , but now adays the headstalls are so pretty

I used the kind that the single ear piece moved so I could adjust it if need be when I put it over her ear..

I took her ear and brow bands off. Just regular headstall. Lol she actually has some muscle behind her ears and it holds it in place. Fixed!

Well that was a very cheap fix , are you unbuckling the headstall to put it on her or is she letting you slip the headstall over her ears?

Unbuckling for now. Sometimes she lets me just put bridle on like a normal horse. lol WHen not putting bridle on I can rub her ears and play with her whole head and she loves it.. could care less.. THats why I don't think she has an actual ear pain issue. SHe goes to sleep when I rub her ears. Buit when saddled and ready to ride she lets me know the mood she is in. I make one attempt and she tells me. lol LOL If its a no go, I just unbuckle and done. SHe looked MAD tonight that I found a trick.. she likes a confrontation. lol

I have a halter bridle combo, I bought it to use on a trail ride. The bit hooks to straps that hook on the side of the halter.
