| We recently purchased a well broke barrel horse for our daughter...She's only had 3 runs on her since we brought her home. Her first run was outstanding, this mare knows what she's doing, I have no doubts that if they can come together, the will be an excellent team. 2nd run wasn't outstanding, but not horrible. 3rd run was horrible...and now I'm starting to panic that they won't come together and did we just make a mistake...am I over thinking, do I need to panic so early...probably not, but I'm a mom and that's what I do...lol.
How long does it usually take to click (I realize it different for everyone, just trying to get some input), she a great mare, my daughter rides very well. The problem is coming into the turns, her 2nd and 3rd barrel are pretty darn solid. First barrel, when she checks up, the mare dives in, she either blows the barrel or hits it? How do fix that, check up closer to the barrel, further back....do you line up differently coming in. Any thoughts, ideas would be helpful. I don't ride, but I'm trying to just give her ideas of things to try, I'm afraid if they continue that way, it will start to instill bad habits for both of them...

Location: Deep South | Is the person you bought the mare from nearby? If possible, I would ask them to do a tuning session on her. Get the mare right, then they can work with your daughter. Give her some tips, show her what she's doing wrong, etc.
If the seller is unavailable, find someone else. Someone you trust, someone with a good reputation to do the same thing. |

Agree. Talk to the previous jockey. Maybe the mare doesn't need to be checked, just collected to get her hip under her. Maybe she doesn't need anything at all. Someone who knows the horse and the way she runs/was trained would be extremely helpful in this situation. |

Ditto on the 3 runs. I have 3 girls that all use to high school rodeo and we bought them nice horses. It took a few months to really click. With one horse we had an issue similar to this so we got help and quit entering. We let her make a run during exhibitions for a few weeks. They got it ironed out and started entering again. If you can't talk or work with the previous owner find a good trainer to go work with, it was always the best money we ever spent. We sent the horse first so they could tune on it and feel what was going on then she fixed the kid :). |
