My horse has been barefoot for I don't even remember how long... 8-10 years or so. My now ex-husband trimmed her for all those years and I was perfectly happy with how they were done. I've had someone else doing them since we got divorced, but was in a pinch so asked him if he could do them. He trimmed her about 4 weeks ago. Right away all the quarters cracked off. I've never seen that happen before. I saw tonight that her frogs had grown strange flaps that stuck out the back of her feet. I thought it was mud. We have had a super dry summer, but have had 3 days of rain, so when I saw it the last couple days I didn't give it much thought - thinking it was mud stuck up into her feet. Tonight I pulled her out to ride and when I cleaned her feet I realized it was her frog. Did I get a half-a**ed trim? Or what might cause those things to happen?

Not all farriers trim the frog
I know he typically does trim the frog, so I was shocked that it had grown so fast. I've ridden her since the trim and never noticed that it was growing like that. She also grew really fast since this last trim. Normally she has a slow growing hoof. Maybe it's shedding.... I've seen it shed before and it didn't look anything like this, so was wondering what was going on. In all the years I've owned her it was just a really weird response to the trim. First all 4 feet had huge chunks out at the quarters and then she had 2-3 inch long flaps hanging out the backs of her front feet. Having her trimmed tomorrow so will ask the regular guy what he thinks.

You were right - she is shedding. I started using a new guy this time and he said it's probably from the terribly dry summer we had and then we were hit with nonstop rain for several days, but it was nothing serious. He was more concerned with how out of balance she was :( Hopefully he can help get her in shape.
