Location: Texas | Just curious if anyone has tricks to keeping a black horse black with out being stalled during the day?

| sweat is your enemy make sure they are hosed off after every ride and yes up in the day and out at night helps too
Making sure the vit/min levels r right helps as well along with a good omega supplement and some paprika helps. Don't spend your money on needless supplements investigate the ingredients and buy bulk you will get the same if not better results |

| If they have to go out during the day, a fly sheet with UV protection should help. |

Location: Piedmont, OK | Keep a fly sheet with neck cover on to keep from getting sun bleached in the spring and summer and fall and blanket in the winter. |

Location: Texas | No its not the bay in the pic :( ..... I have a solid black gelding. He gets hosed off after every ride. We are in construction on a new barn. The one we currently have I do not like the ventilation and dust in it, so I wont stall them long. He looks so faded right now and I do not like it at all. My other horses are not faded at all, its just him. |

Location: Illinois | If they are already faded, nothing you feed them will make that color come back until there is new hair growth. If they've sun bleached in the middle of summer, body clip them and cover them when they're outside. Make sure to do your research on fly sheets and find one with 95%+ UV protection otherwise you're wasting your money. Supplements work on an individual basis. Mine is on smartpaks smart dark & handsome and it works well for him. He typically bleaches almost buckskin in the summer and now he is just brown and he has had no shield from the sun this year at all. If I keep a fly sheet on him he stays black except for by his poll where the neck of the fly sheet doesn't cover. When that happens I just buy a box of hair dye and dye that spot if I am going somewhere where there will be pictures taken. Otherwise I don't worry about it. Black As Knight works well for some horses, but again it is an individual basis. I've found that the best method is to just try and see what works best for your horse, they're not all the same. |

I have found that to not be true. I have a mare who is registered brown, but I swore she was black. Kehlmann sold her to me and she and I debated for hours on whether she was black or not, because she faded. I went ahead and did a DNA test on her, and she truly is black. Some summers she does not fade much at all, and other summers she does. Her black Slick By Design filly sun bleached her summer coat.
I think that was an old ranchers tale before DNA testing was a thing. |

Location: Southwest New Mexico | My mare was bleached out and nasty about this time last year and I put her on forco and she turned her black. She doesn't bleach she. On forco either. |
