Do you run your up and coming horse first then run your finished, solid good horse last OR the other way around? Just curious been a long time since I had more than 1 to run now I have a 12 year old finished mare, a 5 year old mare just starting and next year a 2 year old to haul around.... gonna be busy!

I like to ride my finished horse first then my young ones.. I seem to ride them better that way, I like having a clear mind and not think about my last runs when I ride her.

I've gone back and forth, LOL.

I didn't really get to do any running this year since I had a baby but last year, I was running my (pretty much ) finished horse as well as my 4-year-old.

For a while, I ran my 4-year-old first and then my finished. But sometimes I'd go the other way around. Neither of them require much warming up so I'm lucky there. If one of your horses needs a longer warm-up, you may want to enter that one first so you can spend the time you need with them in the warm-up pen.

So I think it would depend on the rider, and also the horses. You could argue either way. Just do whatever seems more comfortable for you.

Maybe it's "naughty" to do it this way, but sometimes if the ground was a little wet, I'd run my colt first so that the ground would be drier (and faster) for my finished horse, as the day progressed. So the ground situation also influenced my decision sometimes!

I run my young horses first. It helps me to get my bearings in the pen, especially since I don't usually have time to exhibition. I ride my good horse better that way.

I like running younger ones first, that way I can warm them up a little more and if needed do a exbo just before the my run on them. I have three I am running right now and sometimes they end up being back to back, so the last horse I run is my horse I can just jump on and run not much warm up not much thinking. I also use the my younger and/or slower horses to get a feel of the arena before I run my faster horse.

It totally depends on the set of horses I'm running.  I ride more aggressively the second time, so that's a big factor. Also if I have one that doesn't like being left at the trailer, I'm probably going to ride that one first.

I usually run my young one first, and then my finished horse. But the other night I switched it up, and I must say, it went 10x better than when I run the other way around.  But that could very well be an isolated icident of dumb luck

The way it is, here at least, is the order in which you sign up is the order in which you'll run. So if I sign up my colt first, and my finished horse second, then my colt will be drawn earlier than my finished horse.

I am confused. When we do the draw done here, the first horse could draw a later number than the second one you entered. So then you would run the second horse you entered first and then the first one. Example, first horse drew number 30 and second horse drew 13, then the you would run the second horse first and the first horse second. Of course, it depends on the rules of the barrel race, too.

Pretty much everywhere (at least in my experience) here in CA doesn't run that way. If you write down "Black Jack" as Horse #1 on your entry, then "Black Jack" will be drawn as the first horse you run.
Example, I entered a race this tuesday and entered the buckskin horse first, and then the grey horse. Because I wrote bucky down first, she was drawn first (at number 4 specifically), and since I wrote grey down second, she was drawn second (at number 28 specifically).

Same here, I have always been entered in the order I write them on the entry. Additionally there is usually a space to add any requests, spacing between runs, early numbers, etc.

At our smaller jackpots and nbha's you draw a chip, so if I'm standing there with 2 entries I draw 2 chips and hand them in in the order I want to run - they're also pretty good about letting you redraw if you draw 2 really close or they will pick one out for you.

At the bigger jackpots it is luck of the draw. If I really really really have a preference I will late enter whichever one I was to run second so we are in the late draw.

Run your finished horse last. Younger horses always take more of a warm up.

I like to ride whatever horse I think will clock faster last. Ground almost always gets faster as the race goes on.

I run mine based off of how hard they are to get into the arena...

Hard ones go in first. I need my strength to get them where they need to go.

I used to run my horse first, client horses next , then my young horses last.

I can see the pros and cons to each order.

When I was running 3, I ran my solid honest gelding first, kind of get the jitters out, then my free runner. Last I ran the ratey mare, she was super ratey but typically very honest, would do just about anything not to hit one, normally I left her for last as she required the least amount of warmup and by then my brain was fried and she would take care of me.
I've switched up the first two a few times as I got more confident in the free runner, biggest mistake ever was at a race where I just took the free runner and the ratey mare, and ran the ratey mare first then the free runner and forgot to take off my kicking shoes and my forward seat, LOL!!!
