Research has shown slow stress free weaning is best. Foals just jerked away from Momma's are the horses who get mothered up. Hate that!! We just move ours in the next pen or pasture with a common fence line. They can see mom so remaign confidant, but gain their independance. After a month or so, then you can move them further apart.

If you don't have the space I have heard the fence weaning works well. We just split ours from mom and haul off to weaning pen. There is no stress and works great. We weaned ours this weekend, off momma without any nickering and on full feed in 15 minutes.
