Location: Ft Worth TX | So I am not going to lie, I have been riding colts for the past couple years, getting them going on the pattern, and then selling them to someone to finish them. I have 2 fears I have developed as i have gotten older, 1 is the fear of SPEED, the 2nd is EVERY bad thing that could happen crosses my mind headed to the alley (falling, rein breaking, slipping, bridle breaking, cinch breaking, stumbling, ect). Basically I have "Freaked" myself out and often talk myself out of entering. So I have never ran anything but what I have finished- I went out and got a finished horse as a confidence builder, and teacher. New horse has the attitude of "we ARE running regardless, just hang on, I will do my job I swear" (love him to death). But all the bad thoughts cross my mind and it is a MAJOR hindrance and is holding me back. How do you overcome these thoughts??? I have had a couple accidents in the past year (mainly horses falling in bad ground) that has made things worse for me. I WANT to get over these issues and get back to running like I used to. anyone have guidance? | |

Location: Where the stars at night are big and bright, TX | A helmet? A body protector? I ride jumpers, do fox hunting, I grew up in that world and never fully left it even when I ventured into barrel racing. I also live in a very rural area that to even set a bone you have to be flown out - so wearing a helmet and a body protector are things I'm already used to and as I've gotten older and still ride young horses, both have helped me a great deal with any mental aspect of riding something or somewhere I'm unsure of. Sounds like getting hurt is what is worrying you. No one wants to get hurt, and there are solutions out there to make a major injury less likely.

Location: Texas | Trade in those negative thoughts for positive ones. It won't change the possiblity of something bad happening, but it will give you a mental list of things to do that are positive and productive. Its like giving yourself a distraction. It will take practice, and it will require purposeful thought. For example, "I Will look at my rate point, I will keep my hands quiet, I will ride in the middle of my horse" etc, etc, etc. You have a job to do while running. Break it down into mental tasks, and focus on those tasks.
