Well, I have been riding for 60+ years now and just went to a Josey Clinic. I think you get out of it what you put into it.

That would be ideal since I am only about an hour and a half from there.

I think a lot depends on your style, what issues you're having/why you're looking to go to a clinic, and how open minded you're willing to be.

That being said, i very much enjoyed Chris Martin but his style is different, makes a load of sense, but is different. You won't come out with a bandaid on an issue, but a style to go home and work on, practice, probably screw up a few times, but overall I'm seeing awesome improvements and I don't feel like I have to remember to do 100 different things during a pattern.

I have heard great things about him. Thank you for your input! I am not really having any behavioral issues I just want to become a better jockey and trainer. I know there is probably a heep of little things that are costing me that I may not even see.

I loved the Jackie Jatzlau clinic I attended. I had fun at Josey's but if you are experienced you probably already know a lot of the things the teach you.

This is true. However, It is always good to reiterate the basics (well, for me it is, i'm forgetful).

I think the best part of the clinic is Mark Burt's talk. He has the explanation of the turns down to a fine art. He compares your run to the way you get the perfect turns. If you want to shave off several tenths of a second this is the way to do it. We do not run a roll back style around here (probably because we have been trying to beat Martha for the past 50 years, laughing) This is an excellent presentation. You can get his presentation on your DVD and because this is the 50th anniversary of putting on clinics, Mark will let you have it free. Your own video is an excellent training tool.

Well, I have been riding for 60+ years now and just went to a Josey Clinic. I think you get out of it what you put into it.

Agree! I took my daughter who is 12 to a Josey clinic in the spring and it was a great experience for her. They are awesome with kids and she had a great time and learned a lot.

But there were actually all age ranges and levels there and the people who showed the most improvement were the people who actually did what they were telling them to do. The people who had the attitude "I know this" or this is "below my level" ended up showing everyone how little they actually knew.

The nice thing about a Josey clinic is that they have worked with tons of different horses and riders. Right away they knew what needed to be fixed with my daughter and every time they worked with her they worked on what SHE needed. They worked specifically for the needs of each horse and rider, and while they did go over the basics like where they would like to see you in a turn, hand position, etc., no time was wasted trying to change a horse or rider into a particular style or way of training.

Don't get me wrong the josey clinics are great.. BUT realistically speaking.. The one on one time is limited if even at all, we did everything in groups. and it is pretty basic stuff. At a smaller clinic you are gonna get more one on one time with the person you actually paid to train with. I can message Jackie any time I need help and see her at races often and she always says hi and asks how my horse is doing. I know Martha is very personable, but someone with that many clients just cannot keep up with everyone and really give you what you pay for. (imo anyways)

If you just want a good general clinic on basic, go to josey's

If you want to do futurities, go to a futurity trainer
If you want to rodeo, go to someone who has been to the NFR
If you just wann be a weekend warrior and do the barrel races, go to someone that also goes to the big weekend shows and preferably someone you see at shows, you could make a lifelong connection with someone that will keep up with you and keep helping you.

All in all, you get what you put into the clinic. If you don't ask questions, you won't get answers. If you don't participate, you won't learn. Engage yourself in the clinic and it will be succesful!

Just a suggestion, but I've been watching a lot of videos on trainingbarrelhorses.com lately and it has given me a great idea about which trainers I really like. As far as their styles and their way of explaining things. You might look around on there and find who you'd like to learn from.

She was another I looked up. I would love to go to her.

ETA: Jackie is sucessful both in the rodeo arena and in futurities so she fits that bill as well. :)

Great suggestion! I too like that site!! Ryan Pedone, Jordan Briggs, and Danyelle Campbell are a couple of my current favorites at the moment. I watch a lot of Jana Beams also :

Contact a professional privately and get a rate. It will most likely be cheaper than a clinic, more one on one, and a crap ton less gimmicks.

Recently attended a Paul humpheries clinic and loved it. I would love to attend a dena Kirkpatrick clinic.

I sat in for part of a Paul Humphries clinic and felt some of the ideas were a little strange. Friend went to a Dena Kirkpatrick clinic and was disappointed that all they did was trot. I also cost about 3 times what the Josey clinic cost.

I have been to Jackie's clinics a couple times and she will help all levels of riders. She has you fill out a form of what you expect to get out of the clinic, the level you compete and plan to compete at. She also asks you about your goals. Lots of one on one time and she is very easy to talk to.

Paul Humphrey puts on a very good clinic that really focuses on horsemanship. Very personable and lots of great drills that you can you can use on all level of horses.

Dena Kirkpatrick does a really nice clinic that advanced riders can benefit from. She is doing several in Texas this fall with Ian Francis and I hope to get there to do a nutrition segment for her.

I went to a Kristin Weaver-Brown clinic last year and really liked it. She was to the point-but very encouraging which works with my personality. My horse and I went from running in the 4D to running in the bottom of the 1D/2D. I am actually headed to the advanced clinic in a few weeks. I think finding a clinician that fits your style is so important! Kristin's teaching and training style really fits the natural style of my horse.

I have also been to the Josey's and they were excellent for a beginner type clinic to get my feet wet. But I really liked more one-on-one instruction if I am spending that kind of money.

I would highly recommend Kristin Weaver-Brown. She rides every horse too!

The cost of clinics these days has gone through the roof.Way beyond actual value of what you get.  You are much better off, cheaper and ALOT more bang for your buck if you pick someone you really want to ride with and go spend a week one on one. MOST will do this and you are light years ahead. Going to a clinic for $500 - $800 for a 2 day clinic that you will get about a hour of actual focused time just does not pencil out.

I went to one of Joy Cameron's 40 and up clinics. I really learned a lot! She rode everyone's horse and made a barrel run on them. We also got a chance to ride her horse and feel what she was talking about on how a horse should collect correctly. She is a very good and positive speaker and makes you feel right at home. My daughter went to Fallon Taylor for a private lesson with a horse that she was having an issue with. Fallon showed her some exercises to work on, she also made a run on her horse. My daughter loved it and really wants to go again. Best thing is, she no longer has that issue with her horse!
