Location: Texas | One tip i found very helpful was to have an extra pair of gloves handy when doing barn chores, because if your gloves get wet (breaking ice, cleaning buckets) you're done! I got ski gloves from academy sports. Very warm, but must take off to do things that require fine motor skills.
I ride in ski pants over sweat pants. I never get cold legs. I do, however, get cold feet. I am following for tips.....

boots: http://www.cabelas.com/product/KEEN-WOMENS-WAPATO-TALL-BOOT/1842572... I absolutely adore these boots, they stay dry, keep me warm with a good pair of smart wool socks, and fit in the stirrup. Sometimes I throw a toe warmer in there if I'm going to be out for a long time but mostly don't need them.
socks: smart wool hands down, they keep my feet warm and dry and don't bunch up like a bunch of my other wools
wild rag! : get a good silk one I like cowpony's stuff because she's local and they hold up like none other http://cowponywildrags.com
helmet liner or scotch cap. I ride in a helmet so have a smart wool liner for biking people but it fits and works well

Shirts: http://www.terramarsports.com/product/thermawool-crew1 my Terramar is my favorite, so so so warm and moisture wicking. I also love some of my under armor tops and jackets that I layer under a carhart
Gloves: I got a pair at my local feed store that has a pocket on the back of the hand where you can put in a warmer. they are made for riding. I can't remember the brand and I've worn the mark off at this point. BUT the hand heater pocket is a life saver.
ETA: I go for broke for winter riding stuff since I still ride almost every day and hate to be cold, and have an autoimmune disease that cold makes so much worse

Location: North Dakota | I wear insulated bogs with a pair of wool socks, insulated carharts over really loose fitting jeans, winter jacket, with just a turtleneck underneath, my cowboy rag, a warm wool hat and insulated gloves. I feel like the Michelin Man, but I'm warm and dry. I usually don't ride if its below -15 to -20 or super windy because the wind will even cut right through those layers. |

Location: Southern Michigan | Wool! That's my favorite anyways. I worked on and off at cabelas, so I've learned a lot about layering properly for activity. Start off with a good base layer, such as under armour, to the cheap heat last your can find at lower bet retails. Then put a fleece over it for a mid layer. Then your outer layer, that should definitely be wind proof and breathable. You will want your whole outfit to be materials that will wick away the moisture. Cotten is Rotten!!!! You can find Marino wool if you don't like regular scratchy wool. It's super soft, anti microbial, and great at regulating body temp. It can be very pricy though. Cabelas has xpg socks that are part wool and they are amazingly warm and supportive. But regular cheap wool socks work too. If it's really cold I'll also put a goose down vest on under my jacket. And always wear some sort of fleece hat and neck gator. That's where a majority of your heat escapes. I've dressed like this from hunting to cleaning stalls to riding and it's helped wonders. I use the cheaper brands of thermal base layers and they work just as well. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I ride in Underamour pants and shirt, then sweatpants over top with a Tshirt, Sweatshirt and Coat. Usually that is enough since I'm moving so much in the barn etc. When it's -40 or so I throw on some coveralls or ski pants. I love my Carhart Gloves ! ETA I wear Bogs

Location: SW North Dakota | My feet are my lowest common denominator, and get cold easy since I've been frostbit so often. I use little silk socks under wool socks, and throw in a toe warmer. I have Schnee lace up packs that fit decently in the stirrups and are super warm. I wear sweats under bib carhardts, then a 4.0 Under Armor mock turtle neck under a nylon shelled jacket. I like a silk wild rag and a warm old school pull-over-your-face-then-fold-up-so-you-can-see beanie that covers my ears all the way. I need to be warm, but I hate being so bundled up that I can't move. Unless we have cow work that needs to be done (weaning is ALWAYS done on a day thats COLD and windy- sideways ice chunks flying in your eyes), I don't ride much "for fun" if it's colder than 15*. |
