Location: Minnesota | long story short my horse has an abcess on front left and hind left, and I cannot get him to leave it wrapped. I dont know how he gets it off but he does. Any suggestions? Right now its wrapped with vet wrap then duct tape, Ive tried going up his leg a little higher as well. This is the first time having to deal with one and of course its a double whammy  also, I did read the pinned thread, but I cant find tips on the actual wrapping part, just what to pack it with |

| I will try to describe this as best as possible...pack and wrap the foot... I use betadine and sugar mix then put a few 4x4 gauze on top. Then wrap with vet wrap going over heel bulbs and about half way up the pastern. You want snug bit not tight. Then take a larger round piece of inner tube which is about 3 inches larger all the way around the hoof. Cut slits in the inner tube all the way around so you can fold them up around the hoof. Tape this around the hoof ...I usually use black electrical tape... Folding every second flap up then the last flaps after you have gone around once or twice..be careful at the back where the tape is that it is more at the bulbs than tight at the pastern..use your judgement as to how much tape you need and you can also put some duct tape over the black if you want...I don't. Hope this helps and you can understand what I mean...it tough to put into writing! Lol. Good luck! |

| Gorilla tape pad, over what ever your favorite treatment is. Make sure the pad overlaps the foot. Then, make a few passes around th foot, with gorilla tape. May be hard to get off, but wont fall off. |

| I use whatever treatment I need, then wrap the foot with about 1/2 roll of Vet wrap (co-flex or whatever). I then take a couple of wraps with duct tape, making sure that some over laps the bottom of the foot. I take about 6" pieces of tape and make a couple of layers across the bottom of the foot. Then I go back to wrapping around the hoof making sure that I seal those flaps on the bottom to secure them and making sure that some of the tape is up higher on the narrower part of the hoof to hold the whole thing on.
It may take some trial and error but they will walk through the bottom of it before they lose it. I replace every 12 hours. I would advise to NOT apply tape to the hoof, which it why I vet wrap first. Makes it easier to cut off and I would be afraid that the tape would damage the protective layer on the outside of the hoof.
I have many, many of these duct tape booties that I have cut off in my trash. |

Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana | wrapping a foot is the hardest. you have to get it tight enough to stay but please be careful not to wrap the coranett band to tight. that area needs circulation. i like the gorilla pads when i can find them but have resorted to putting a medicine boot on after vet wrap lately. good luck. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | When I have to have a wraped foot, I used vet wrap use the cotton pads for the sole for the meds and wrap with vet wrap and then I will use a bell boot to help them from picking at the wraps. Works good for me  |

I considered using an easy boot but sinces its both front and hind on the left side I dont want to sore him up from being unbalanced..? i have only used soft rides so Im not sure how much these boots add. Can I used them on just the left side? |

I thought about using gorilla tape, Im just trying to figure out how to keep the dirt from packing in the top of the wrap. Right now I have gauze, then vet wrap, then layers of duct tape. and the dirt seems to get in the top of the wrap. I have now confined him to a foaling stall, but Im hoping they are just about done draining. They were both opened by a vet on Friday. Once they are done draining, do I still have to keep his foot wrapped? I know it has to stay clean and I dont want dirt getting back into the hole, how does everyone manage this? |

This is what I do. Clean, Pack (pack depends on what stage its in. My vet directed me to use a salt base to draw it out, once its out or open, switch to a sugar base to dry it up), wrap with a diaper, vet wrap over diaper, then duct tape to finish it off. all mine lasted 24 hrs (with shod horses). However, as vet directed, I always change it every 24 hrs. Therefore don't need the wraps to last for an extended period of time. |

Location: Canada | I use a baby diaper then duct tape. I pack the hoof with whatever I'm using and then I put a baby diaper on it. Typically the Size 1 Diaper (or whatever is a step up from the newborn size). The diaper is large enough to tuck the foot into and the tabs work well to secure everything in place around the pastern. Then I wrap the foot with duct tape. The combination seems to work well to keep the foot dry, clean, and the packing in place.

Location: Minnesota | so I took this horse to the vet on friday as he was lame on and off on his front feet. They cut an abcess out of the toe of his back foot and couldnt pinpoint anything on his fronts (which is why I took him in in the first place) so we did xrays and they found an abcess on the front left as well. They cut that one out as well, so I am just following vet insructions to have wrapped until they stop draining. Then should I leave it open? Can he be turned out? I just dont want anything packing into the holes...? |

Location: North Dakota | What I always do is after soaking in epsom salts, water, and iodine, is use the poultice pads that you soak in water with a bit of iodine, Put that on the bottom of the hoof, then put a diaper on. I get ones large enough that they cover the whole hoof. Then vet wrap all over where the diaper was. Then with the Duct tape I take 5 or 6 strips about 8-10" long and lay them side by side, overlapping each slightly. Then I lay 5 or 6 the opposite direction over those. Do this on a flat surface that you can peel the tape off of. Put this sheet of duct tape on the bottom of the hoof and wrap the sides with more duct tape to hold it in place. After I bought my horse, he had severe abscess issues for 2 months that required daily wrapping and this method never failed me. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Another thing I like for helping to draw out an abcess are my PHT bell boots, they helped to draw 2 that my grass founder gelding had.

| To my surprise the Gorrilla tape is much better then plain Duck tape. I had to keep my horse's foot wraped for about weeks a year ago and the gorrilla tape was great. Also if you want to use the inner tube,(works great for keeping dry) I just wrap the foot how ever needed then take a section of inner tube and put the foot inside of it. Fold over the end and tape up around the ankle. If you use a long enough section, after it gets a hole in it just slid the innertube up or down a little. That way you get a lot of use out of one innertube. |

Location: Minnesota | I used the T-Rex tape (bought on accident thinking it was duct tape) and that has been working well for me. That being said, the abcess on his front is done draining, and then hind is just about done I think (minimal drainage last night). Once they are done draining what do you do? Leave wrapped? I know you dont want anything to get back in the track, but Im not sure the best route to go here? Any tips  |
