How do you honestly go about researching the candidates?  It seems that media isn't playing fair, Wikipedia can be altered by anyone, and just because it's on the internet elsewhere, doesn't mean it's true.

Anyone have any good suggestions?  It's not like we can look info up in books because again, they pick and choose what it published.  I'm at a loss on doing good political reseach and finding truthful information that I can trust.

There are some really good "who is my candidate" quizzes that will show how your positions on policy and issues align with each one. This is how we should be voting anyway, not on cults of personality.

I align 84% with Trump, and 40% with Killary. Gary Johnson is a 92% match for me, but there are a couple of his positions that I can't live with (because he is NOT a real Libetarian), plus he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning.

Good question, I used Isidewith.com as a general tool but I also use opensecrets.org. I take anything the MSM says with a grain of salt. I like NPR but even they sometimes come off as biased. When I detect bias I usually have to go read more about the subject at hand and look for the factual information and sometimes you just have to read between the lines.

In everything there is a grain of truth. Balance your research across multiple sources. Some that are pro certain candidates and others that are cons for certain candidates. Always start with the candidates own websites. Also look at foreign news. They usually have some interesting outside perspectives.

I do agree with looking at the foreign media! They have a different outsiders persepective.  I have a few friends around the world.  Their perspectives are also interesting to hear.

I have friends in Australia and their news portrays America in an even worse light than our own media does.

Why would you, of all people, be interested in a thread asking for reliable, objective information on political candidates? By your own admission, you are a "Yellow Dog Democrat", which means you always vote for every Democrat, regardless of their positions or track record. You are a lemming....a programmed robot.....an unmalleable tool. You would vote for all Democrats, including the racists in your party from the 60s and 70s, along with today's racists.

I would ask everyone to read and reread Article II of THE CONSTIUTION. In a little over three weeks WE THE PEPOLE are going to decide which road the UNITED STATES goes down for the next forty to fifty years. Please read the oath the President MUST take and what it means. Please read what the job really is. And decide which of these two people can live up to that oath. I took that oath in 1969 I meant every word of it than and I still mean every word today. It's not about who said what or what he or she is going to give you it is about who can live up to the oath of office. To me there is only one choice. You will have to decide yourself. BUT by all means get up and VOTE. There is way to much at stake this time.

The first step is to research the issues independently of any candidate, from multiple news sources. I do not watch the news on TV. Most of it is worthless. I get almost all my info from various sources online that I've found and trust. Cross checking multiple sources is necessary. You want to have a background knowledge before any candidate starts speaking, so you know what's reasonable and what's BS. For example, Hillary trying to explain how raising taxes would stimulate the economy or Trump trying to justify "stop and frisk" or explaining how tarriffs would somehow help us rather than cause a depression again.

I like to listen to the candidates and see how what they say compares to what I know to be true through research and what their party platform is. The VAST majority of republicans only adhere to the platform they say represents them a small amount of the time, when it is convenient.

Another reliable test is isidewith.com, as others have mentioned. Make sure you answer ALL the questions though, as this will affect the outcome. And it is still just a computer test so it isn't 100% perfect. I'd say it is very good though. I sided 94% with Austin Petersen, 90-something % with Cruz, and 90-80% with 3 other libertarians including Gary Johnson. I'd say this is accurate considering I am an ex-republican that, as I got more involved in politics, actually going to state conventions, local meetings, talking with party officials and canidates 1 on 1, etc. saw the light and became a Libertarian.
