Gosh my horse is funny. Sometimes when I ride they get sweaty as usual and then i go and check on them a few hours later and they are dry except for over the top of their Butt!! Still wet. Horse feels just fine and is competing extremely well. Any ideas??

Normal ..

I think most western riders do not have a good standard cooling down plan for their horse after a run or a sweaty workout.

It takes longer to cool down a horse than the activity they just got thru doing ..

Arena horse cool down:
Ride at a walk for 15-20 minutes...
Unsaddle put halter on ..
Hose down thoroughly including between the back legs ..
Sweat stick him ..
Towel him off ..
Hand walk for 15-20 minutes ..
(He will dry off quicker if you brush him with a medium stiff
brush while hand walking ..)

A decent cool down takes 45-60 minutes ...

Thanks! She also paces the fence in her pen for a little bit as soon as she is done to. Well she kind of does it off and on all day. Just her. Lol. I do a longer cool out but your right , not near what you described and it's been getting cold when I ride and have not been rinsing. Just brushing until dry. Thanks again!

I am a terrible owner. I unsaddle them, turn them out, let them roll and let themselves cool themselves out. If it is rather hot, I will rinse them off first.

Okay, so last week after some funny changes in weather when I went to feed in the morning my gelding came up to eat, wet over just his back, kind of like a saddle sweat mark and then just around the tail head...gut noises were good, respiratory was normal, as was heart rate and gums. Few days later same thing. Seems to me same thing happened last year during the fall weather change too.
