Alright. I keep getting mixed opinions from people and I thought I should come to those who have probably experienced the same. My horse jumped on my foot 15 days ago to be exact, like straight up on in the air 2-3' and directly on top of my foot. Thankfully she is barefoot and I had boots on. I had the smarts to sit down and take my boot off within seconds of the incident. Foot showed contusions and swelling instantly. Long story short, I didn't get x-rays until the next day. Doc, who was a physicians assistant, said no breaks just lots of soft tissue damage. I did the best I could for the first couple days with wrapping with vet wrap, ice, elevation, and ibuprofen. Now I am seeing bruising that has spread to non trauma areas and darker at that. It is also more sensitive to the touch than it was in the beginning. I have only been able to wear tennis shoes and flip flops in the last two weeks. I am wondering if I should go back to babying it or go into my family doctor now for a second opinion?

You could very easily have a blood clot. Blood clot colleges, can be extremely serious.

Go to a Doctor with your X-rays. I broke my wrist, but the guy at the emergency room who read my X-rays said I didn't but I still needed to see a doctor, so I took the X-rays to my orthopedic dr. He said I definitely broke it. So, go to a doctor.

The bruising will gravitate down, and can pool on the bottom of your foot. Yes it will look darker because it is old.
The risk for a blood cloth is there, so you might want to go back for a second opinion. I have had huge bruises (being kicked, or ran into a fence, or hit a barrel, or... yea you get the picture) and when they are bigger than my fist I go in to have it checked out.
Also, remember, if your foot was swollen when they x-rayed it, it might still have a hairline fracture. That is hard to see with swelling.

If I was you, I would go and have it checked out again, since it has been 15 days it should've started to get better by now. (not the bruising, that can take weeks to months depending on the severity...)
Good luck, hope you feel better soon!

A horse did that to me and tore a vein.  It kept seeping, so the dr put me in a pressure bandage for 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your quick replies. I will schedule an appointment with our family doctor who has x-ray equipment to get a second opinion. Hubby, who works out of state, said that what I am experiencing is normal. Something is nagging me otherwise. Hopefully he is right and I just need to be more patient.

To be on the safe side, its better to go back and have it rechecked.

I thought I broke my foot, went to have it x-rayed a day later and was told no, badly sprained. 6 weeks later still in pain and having a hard time walking went back to doctor and had some sort of a scan done. I had shattered many bones with the main bone that keeps most of the other foot bones in place out of place. The first X-rays don't always tell the story right away.

There are no casts for broken feet bones ... doctor might give you advice not to bump it and do cold compacts on it to increase bloodflow to the area to carry off the bruised blood along with some aspirin to thin your blood and deal with swelling, pain and inflammation .... (aspirin is the one that deals with all three)
You might wrap it lightly for a little bit of stability ... but not much you can do for a bruised or broken foot ...

Time is your best friend .. so hobble around until you get better and
buy my radar boot toe alarm system so this does not happen again ..
lol ..

Been there ... the point of impact was about an inch above my toes ... brushing and swelling moved around quite a bit. I gimped around like that for about a week and finally broke down and went to the doc. Nothing broken and doc said brushing moves. With that said, go to the doctor just to be safe!

I do have it vet wrapped again today and that seems to be helping the pain, so I will wrap it as insurance for now. I need to go in tothe doc for other stuff, so I will probably have an all inclusive visit. Now what are radar shoes? I might need some. lol I am normally good at staying light but happened to get distracted for a moment and that was all she wrote.

Go get an X-ray.
Went to barrel race 3 hrs away.
Unloaded, horse sucked back on trailer n came down on r foot.
Shoe struck top of foot near ankle, I shoved her back n slide down my foot to toes.
Woohoo did it hurt. I wrapped w vet wrap, cut boot and somehow still ran.
Next day X-ray revealed broke little toe.
I was swollen half way up the leg.
Nerve damage on top of foot.
Boot cast for 8 weeks.
Still have no feeling on top of my foot and can't wear my cute high heels as my foot goes to sleep n swells. :0(
This was in 2011.
GO GET X-RAY or second opinion from a orthopedic Dr.

Once stepped on .. your feet develop a 6th sense to move thy feet in a hurry ... lol ..

YOu know it is amazing how we forget the best old home remedies that worked for hundreds of years ...

Soak your foot or your whole body in some warm Epson salts ....
great for soreness and reducing bruises ...

I still have a tendency to follow my parents and granparents teachings ..

Always wait a couple of weeks to see if you are going to die or not before
going to a doctor ... lol

Soft tissue swelling can make small bone breaks hard to see on X-rays taken immediately after an injury. My mom caught her hand in a wood splitter a few summers ago and there was great debate for about a week and 3 different doctors and sets of X-rays over whether or not it there were any breaks. Once she got the swelling under control there was a pretty obvious hairline fracture that showed up.

I also waited 5 months to go get an X-ray on my wrist after a took a tumble (off my own feet, no horse needed). The soft tissue and bruising healed and i had no pain except for a few movements. I actually had broken it and had to have it screwed back together since I'd waited so long.

I'd get a second opinion.

A couple years ago I had a horse stomp on my foot--not as bad as yours, but bad enough that I did go get it x-rayed. Nothing broken, but I had to use crutches because I could NOT walk on it. I had just bought a pair of PHT tendon wraps so I thought I'd give it a try, lol. Let me tell you, that thing worked wonders. It took the pain away and I was back to walking on it just a day after starting using it. Since it worked so well for me, I have a lot more confidence using them on my horse :)

The exact same thing happened to me.  It created a huge blood clot that finally busted out the top of my foot when I accidentally knocked the scab off one day.  (Sorry for the grossness).  I had gone & had xrays too.  No breaks.

My sister broke her cuboid bone in her foot while hiking recently. ER doc said nothing broken, it's a sprain.  Went to an ortho, ortho said X-rays inconclusive let's do a CT.   Second opinion on X-rays from my ex who is a podiatrist said broken without a doubt, you need a new dr. Screenshot of CT clearly showed broken cuboid, but radiologist missed it. Went to ortho for follow up after CT, he walked in and said nothing broken, it's a sprain. My sister was like you must not have looked at the scans, go get them and we'll look together. Ortho got embarrassed when he actually looked. Haha.  Doctors are human...who knew?

Looks like we all have some horse and foot horror stories. I thought getting stepped on hurt, I have now decided being jumped on is much worse. I went to my regular doctor today who had more x-rays taken. They are saying nothing is broken, but they want radiology to take a peek anyway. So, no definite answer. They said it does appear that I had a blood vessel burst on top of my foot. From what they said is that takes longer than a break to heal and for the pain to go away. I am supposed to wrap the foot until it feels better, however long that may be.

Thank you all for your stories and help!
