Location: California | Have to share!! Pretty dang excited about this boy. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/comic+justice Stands about 15.2 at 17 months old...
Would actually love info on feeding a yearling/2 year old if anyone has input. Youngest one I have personally owned/trained.

| VERY NICE GOOD LOOKING COLT!!!
It is rare to see a paint or appy or colored qh dominate the color of a TB parent ..
his dam is valuable to be able to put the colors to her offspring like that!!
Hope he turns out to be the athlete you are looking for ..
his conformation is excellent...
I feed all of my horses the same thing according to their weight ..
and keep feed as natural as possible since there is so much crap
even in expensive milled feed these days ...
I combine a good clean 14% protein 5-6% natural fat content...
sweet feed that shows corn, oats etc and very few items you
can't pronounce and fiber less than 16% mine is not a national brand.
WITH whole oats 50-50 in a bucket to mix with sweet feed
and do a flake of alfalfa per day to their hay needs
this is a necessary in my barn ... ADM GROSTRONG MINERALS ..
the 50# loose bags run ~$40... throw a handful every other day
in their feed .. the minerals and vitamins sure make a difference ..
you will see a good constant bloom and heathy horses using this ..
No other supplements needed ..
for extra shine ..
throw a handful of WHOLE FLAX seeds daily in his feed ..
The above figures out to be around 12.5% protein ...
the corn is for the natural fats
Looking at your colt .. start with 8 lbs of the grain mix daily
and increase or decrease a little bit as he grows to maintain
that look of health and alertness ..
I LIKE THIS COLT!!

I knew a older lady back when I was a kid that had a marked App like this one, his name was Jessi, lol the lady was maybe the age that I am now, but she rode that horse all over town and I followed along on my little paint pony Buttermilk.. |

Location: California | Thanks everyone! =) I've never owned an appy, or even ridden one for that matter. Granted he is technically 1/2 TB and I have ridden many of those. They are very rare in our area. I'm not a huge man of most color patterns but recently I decided I wanted one if I could find one I really liked. I'm not one to follow the beaten path and like different. He happened to pop up and happened to be 1/2 running bred so I jumped on it. He was 1000 times pretty when I saw him person than he was in the photos they had posted and I haven't stopped smiling since! Amazing demeanor as well. |

Wowsa! That's a lot of grain. Out of curiosity, wouldn't horses be better off with more forage and less grain? A flake of hay does not seem like much, maybe I misunderstood. |

As far as feeding...my now 2 year olds have gotten 1# alfalfa pellets + 2# Strategy GX, twice a day since weaning. And lots of good brome. Best looking colts I've ever had! Never got gangly or pot gutted, great muscle and balance. Good feet. I've been extraordinarily happy with the results.

I usually don't feed processed feeds and make my own basic mixture of rice bran, beet pulp, oils, ect. He is not currently a fan though LOL. I might try it. Do you feed a basic hay with your alfalfa pellets/grain or do you feed alfalfa as well?
Editted to add: I do feed Platinum Performance and from what I have read it is safe for young/growing ones. I do want some extra calories though whether it be through pellets, more hay, or grain.

The only hay I feed is high quality brome, and plenty of it.
To add extra calories, you're always better to do that through good hay if at all possible. But there are good calorie products available such as Amplify or Max-E-Glo. But you do not get the fermentable fiber with them, which is what will keep your horses warm and the gut functioning properly. Beet pult is a great fermentable fiber, however it comes with it's own set of challenges when feeding, such as an upside down cal:phos ratio that needs to be corrected--ESPECIALLY in a young horse. I usually shy away from supplemental beet pulp in growing horses for that reason. Good hay is essential for a young horse, but IMO grain holds great importance for it's source of protein and balanced vitamins and minerals that they typically cannot get out of hay, alfalfa being the exception. |

Location: California | I have access to good quality alfalfa hay which is a plus. It does come at the cost of a pretty penny but it is worth it. I am familiar with over feeding protein though - especially in an already large and fast growing colt. So between alfalfa and Platinum do I need to add the Strategy? I feel like that is quite a bit. Maybe just some rice bran? |

Are you feeding hay besides the alfalfa? Alfalfa is a great feed source, but I don't believe it should be fed as the sole fiber/roughage source because you cannot feed enough of it without creating problems. Personally, if I had the access to the good alfalfa, I'd feed Strategy for the vitamin/mineral package with the amino acid/protein benefits, a flake of alfafa for the protein and calcium and free choice brome for the fermentable fiber. But that's just me as a nutritionist... |

Yes, he has access to our home grown grass hay 24/7. I think I will give the Strategy a chance! Thank you so much for all of your help!! I really appreciate it. |
