Location: Florida | How could this happen? All over the country and not found for 10 years! The instructions given to the state National Guard comanders must have been wrong or misleading. This is horrible, there should be a statute of limitations that would cover this. |

I had already read about and discussed it on FB. I signed the petition, although change.org isn't really legit since there's no signature verification, and petitions can be edited after people have signed. IOW no one will take it seriously. I do hope our govt does the right thing and lets the soldiers keep the money they earned. |

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | It's an absolute disgrace!! We should be calling our Congressmen and Senators and DEMAND they correct this. They are the ones who make the laws after all.... If they can quickly pass a "tax allowance" law for the Olympians, they can quickly pass a fix for this situation. The government LIED when these men and women enlisted. THEY need to fix it!! |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I wonder if Obama likes seeing this. He's probably thinking it takes at least some of the focus off the latest ObamaCare news, which is disastrous. It wouldn't surprise me if he figured us peons can't focus on more than one disgrace at the same time. |

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/10/26/carter-suspends-pentagon-s-demand-return-cash-bonuses-to-california-soldiers.html
DEVELOPING: The U.S. Secretary of Defense said Tuesday that he is ordering the Pentagon to suspend its effort to recover the decade-old reenlistment bonuses paid to thousands of California Army National Guard soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. About 2,000 soldiers were recently told they had to repay the cash bonuses that, in some cases, amounted to $15,000 or more. Ash Carter, the secretary, said in a statement that there is a process in place to assist soldiers who seek relief of such obligations, and in this case, “hundreds” of Guard members have already sought and have been granted relief. “But that process has simply moved too slowly and in some cases imposed unreasonable burdens on service members,” the statement read. “That is unacceptable.” Carter did not mention any timeframe that the suspension will expire, but he insisted that it will be in place until he is “satisfied that our process is working effectively.” Faced with a shortage of troops at the height of the two wars, California Guard officials offered bonuses of $15,000 or more for soldiers to reenlist. A federal investigation in 2010 found thousands of bonuses and student loan payments were improperly doled out to California Guard soldiers. About 9,700 current and retired soldiers received notices to repay some or all of their bonuses with more than $22 million recovered so far. Soldiers said they feel betrayed at having to repay the money. "These bonuses were used to keep people in," said Christopher Van Meter, a 42-year-old former Army captain and Iraq veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart. "People like me just got screwed." Van Meter said he refinanced his home mortgage to repay $25,000 in reenlistment bonuses and $21,000 in student loan repayments that the military says was improperly given to him. The California Guard said it has to follow the law and collect the money. "At the end of the day, the soldiers ended up paying the largest price," Maj. Gen. Matthew Beevers, deputy commander of the California Guard told the Times. "We'd be more than happy to absolve these people of their debts. We just can't do it. We'd be breaking the law." |
