I just bought a six month old colt about a week ago and he's never been touched. We are working on that but in the meantime I am worried about his belly button. It sticks out about an inch maybe and is about the size of a quarter. I have seen herneas ? Before but it doesn't really look like that. And it hasn't gotten any bigger since the first time I seen the colt a couple months ago. So is there anything I can do myself once we can handle him a little better or is this like a take him to the vet now at all costs situation?

I had a filly with one like that. It wasn't very big. But it was a hernia. The vet said she would normally leave them alone but since it was a filly and I might want to breed her one day then it needed to be fixed. So might want to take him and have it checked just in case. May not even have to do anything to it.

I'd try to do some research before you breed anything with a hernia. Sometimes they are genetic and seem to be dominant if they are. Other times, they are caused by trauma (for example, maybe the umbilical cord was infected or tore too short)- those would be ok to breed...

Oh I'm not going to breed her. This was 10 years ago and at the time we didn't know what we were going to do with her or if we were even going to keep her.
