| I'm waiting for the vet clinic to open so thought I'd check here. My old guy cut his back leg last night on some barbwire. It peeled the skin down a bit and is deep, but not in the joint or any meat/bone. I hosed it and cleaned it with betadine solution and gave him bute. Due to the location there was no way to stitch it and I'm not sure that a wrap would stay on. He is out in the pasture and that is where he is the happiest and does the best (have had past issues with ulcers and not holding weight) so he moves around a lot. I want to start him on antibiotics but there is no way he's going to handle a full round of penicillin. Is there a strong antibiotic that is a single dose? |

| What's a "full round of penicillin"?
You can feed antibiotics. There is also slow release penicillin. Ask your vet when they open up, they will have the best idea of what options will work for your situation. |

Location: Southeast, Texas | We have a weanling at the vet now due to a wire cut. (One day my entire pasture will be wire free!!) His was to the bone on the front side of his cannon. It has to stay wrapped. He got a tetanus booster, but they didn't put him on antibiotics. It gets cold hosed, lathered in ointment and re-wrapped twice a day.
Good luck! |

Location: Southeastern Idaho | I had a very serious wound years ago where the bone was exposed. Vet gave me the feed through penicillin powder and did not require injections other than the initial one. I mix the powder in maple syrup then squirted in his mouth like wormer. I didn't trust him to eat it all. It worked well. Complete healing with no issues other than a scar. Horse is in use today. Good luck! |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | Same thing happened to me. I gave SMZ's for 14 days. Just dissolved in water in syringe and put in his mouth everyday. Also I kept it bandaged/wrapped. Its a really bad area for proud flesh to develop. |

| Here are a couple of pictures on one I have been working on since July 1. She was given pills (SMZ)for a month, kept her wrapped for almost 3 months and was doing well. She just blew up last night with some kind of infection in that leg now but doing well. It was a huge wound. I am also using PEMF on it with good results.

Location: Southeastern Idaho | Mine was actually similar to this, from the hair line of the hoof to the hock. Bone exposed the whole length. 3 cases of coflex and extra large telfa pads later he healed up great. I wrapped my horses wound every other day from April to November. Good luck with yours! They do heal.

Hers wraps around the inside to the bottom of fetlock and goes up her gaskin. I am afraid I will be wrapping all winter to keep it from freezing. It blew up yesterday and she was lame and had a fever much better today after bute and antibiotics . We are thinking she has an abcess in there so hoping we can clear it up. She was actually pretty lucky all things considered. I had a bad year I don't even count how much I have spent at the vet . |

I am sorry! I know what a worry and constant stress these kinds of wounds are. I bet you are right, you will be wrapping this for a loooong time. Longer than what you would guess. (at least my boys went much longer) It would look great and I would leave it open to the air and it would blow up, then on the wraps would go again for awhile. Off and on until it quit doing that.
I went through a ton of Schrieners Herbal Solution, my go to for wounds like this. I would soak the telfa's in it then wrap. Really it should come in a gallon size.
I was tempted (broke and tired) towards the end to just turn him out and let it go. But I didn't quit and it paid off. It will be for you too. Positive thoughts and prayers your way. Your care will pay off. |
