Looking to order a branding iron to freeze brand a few colts... We have not had the best luck with our current iron and I am thinking we don't have the right metal for that bright white brand I'm looking for...

Where have y'all had the best luck ordering freeze brands from? Any certain makers to stay away from? Our brand is super simple, so I don't need anything fancy - just quality. TIA!

Mine is also brass, and like already mentioned, you're timing has to be impeccable for a perfect white brand.

We shave the hair as close as possible. Wipe with rubbing alcohol to get it clean. Then press the brand hard against them, gently rocking it up and down for 10 seconds. This is for older horses. I've heard if branding horses younger than a year older their skin is thinner and you can only leave it on for about 7 seconds.

I have 2...a larger iron one and have used it for freezing and hot branding.
My smaller one is brass for freezing.
Timing is everything on a freeze brand reguardless of what is used for the iron.

I freeze brand as a side job of sorts... I use liquid nitrogen ( Best predictable method) and Minimum 17 seconds to 24 seconds depending on color of the horse. I can't imagine 7-10 seconds getting the job done. :)

Interesting I get the vets to do it and they leave it on for 45 seconds

Mine also came from Flying45. We haven't actually gotten around to using it lol. Waiting until we have the whole barn's teeth done. That way the ones that will need sedating will already be knocked out.
I have a couple crazies I'm not chancing a botch job on haha.

Interesting comments on freeze branding.  We have built irons and freeze branded since about 2001.  Probably branded over 3000 head of horses and several hounds..  Our irons are built using 1/4" cold roll round stock steel. We experimented with brass, copper, stainless and settle in the cold roll steel for horse irons.   There are many advantages to using a brand that you can see through rather than a solid piece of brass.  We especially don't care to use brass irons when it's a jaw brand.  We brand with liq nitrogen and our average length of time to stay in a horse is 12-13 seconds.  If it is a light grey or white horse we will stay in for about 30 seconds to kill color and growth follicle. There are some crucial steps and ways of doing it that make a huge difference. We get a lot of referrals from vets.

We use liquid nitrogen as well. All of the ones we have left on for 15-20 seconds have finished "bald" no white hair growth.

Wonder if geography has anything to do with it? Weird!

Mine as well. Highly recommend them. My brand is 6" but that is because it's a steer head, doesn't look huge on the horses.

Super consistent in the way they hold the cold and that gives you a super brand. My husband branded 1000 calves every fall and we went thru many brands before he fell for L&H. Our horse brands are 30 years old and still place a great brand on the horses. We just ordered new # brands for the calves. We use alcohol and dry ice on cattle (takes us about 15 min a calf) and nitrogen on the horses.
