Location: TEXAS | Does anyone leave the tail alone or do you braid or bag it? My gelding has a long nice tail but I'm finding braiding and bagging is breaking it off. But if I leave it down I'm afraid he will swish it all out because flies are so bad. |

| Both my heading horses tails drag the ground. I don't do anything with them except rinse with EQ Solution every now and then. Don't brush it, that will really break it up
Edited to add that I do hold it up while they back out of the trailer so they don't step on it

Location: Oklahoma | My black horse's tail drags the ground , I never braid or bag it as he runs out of his stall yr round, not safe .with our trees n fences . I do not brush it , I wash it once a month and finger comb it out then. He gets fed Source which is great for coats n hooves. I have had many horses w such tails , it is more a genetic thing than anything but you can maintain it by doing as little as possible to it. Cold water rinses and deep leave in conditioners will grow one out. His mane is not as great :( as he rolls in mud n rubs on trees. Arrgg |

Location: on my horse | My mare has an amazingly long mane and tail. Mane is past the point of her shoulder and tail is on the ground. I braid and bag her tail and when the weather is wet like now, and I keep her mane braided. I also keep it braided for the most part during the summer since its so thick and she sweats bad under it. Just four chunky braids unless I want to keep them in longer.
Her tail is loose all summer but I keep it bagged in the winter/spring to keep it clean and mud ball free. I braid at least the last 8 inches when I ride so she doesn't step it out on a backup. I also always use detangler before I brush it out and am careful with my brush i.e. start from the bottom and pick through.
Tail bag is one of the velcro in tail sacks instead of the braid in types and I just make sure I redo everything when it starts looking ratty and I change my braid styles. Like I'll go 4 in the mane, then up to 7, back to a middle number etc so it's not always pulling on her skin in the same spot. For her tail I french braid it then braid just below the bone and switch back and forth each time.
Her hair is really thick though, like the individual strands are giant so maybe that's part of why she can keep a nice growth, plus the insane amounts of detangler  I should buy stock. |

| I just leave my horse's down. I don't brush it out unless I put detangler in first.

Ok, for those that leave it down, don't they swish them when turned out?? That's what I hate...to see them swishing them, LOL I know that's what they are for  |

| We have cutters and barrel horses and I trim all our tails to keep them from dragging the ground and to let the new growth catch up (they become thicker). I don't put them in bags but I will tie tails up or braid them when we work horses to keep them from pull it out when stopping/backing up. I also always try to tie tails up when the horses are backing out of the trailer. As far as hair care....we just use EQ or normal shampoo/conditioner and always try to spray with detangler before brushing. |

| How do you guys not have problems with knots in the tails?! It seems like every month I'm trying to get a big rat out of two of my horses tails... i was thinking about braiding them for the winter and seeing how that will work... |

I think because I go through a full large bottle of mane and tail detangler at least every 2 weeks |
